The Iowa State men’s golf program has made a resurgence on the national scene in head coach Andrew Tank’s 14-year tenure with the Cyclones, cementing Cyclone golf as one of the top teams in the Midwest.
NCAA postseason appearances have become the norm with Tank in charge. Before Tank’s arrival in 2010, the Cyclones hadn’t appeared in an NCAA Regional since 1999. He quickly changed the culture and success of the program by directing a team or an individual in qualifying for 11 of the last 12 NCAA Regional competitions (Team- 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019; Individual- 2013, 2016, 2021, 2023, 2024).
Perhaps Tank’s biggest achievement has been his ability to lead the Cyclones to the pinnacle of collegiate golf. Tank and the Cyclones ended a 61-year drought by qualifying for the 2014 NCAA Championships, their first appearance at the national meet since 1953. He again led ISU to the national meet in 2017, as the Cyclones tied for 18th, their best finish in the modern era.
In 2018, the Cyclones made one of their biggest turnarounds in school history. Ranked No. 88 nationally in February, Iowa State climbed over 40 spots in the national polls to earn a NCAA Regional berth followed by its second-straight NCAA Championship appearance.
Iowa State earned its second consecutive top-20 finish by tying for 19th at the 2018 NCAA Championship.
ISU has also been a consistent winner under Tank. He’s won 12 tournament titles, finished runner-up 17 times, mentored 17 individual medalists and produced six All-Big 12 performers a total of nine times as the Cyclone skipper.
The 2023-24 Cyclones won three tournaments, the most in a single season since the 2016-17 team won three as well. Iowa State took home the title at the Iowa Fall Classic, the Zach Johnson Invitational and the Tiger Collegiate Invitational. For the second-straight year, Luke Gutschewski qualified for the NCAA Regional, becoming the first player in school history to qualify for the NCAA Regionals as an individual multiple times. Gutschewski broke the school record for 54 holes with a 198 at the Zach Johnson Invitational, taking home the title. Gutschewski's 70.86 stroke average was the second-best in school history behind his 70.78 from the year before. Freshman Owen Sawyer shot a 73.03 on the year, the fifth-best by a freshman in program history.
Tank has also coached five of the top players in school history in Nate McCoy, Scott Fernandez, Nick Voke, Tripp Kinney and Luke Gutschewski.Â
In 2012, McCoy was an All-American and became the first Cyclone individual to qualify for the NCAA Championship since 1980. He tied for 29th at the national meet, the best finish by a Cyclone at the NCAA Finals in the modern era.
Fernandez ended his career (2012-15) as one of the most decorated golfers in school history, earning Ping Second-Team All-America honors (2013) and a spot on European’s Palmer Cup squad (2013).
Fernandez, who is ISU’s school-record-holder in top-10 finishes (29) and sub-70 rounds (28), has continued his success professionally, qualifying for the 2016 Open Championship as a member of the European Tour.
Voke earned all-tournament honors at the Big 12 Championship a school-record three times and ended his career owning school records in tournament victories (five) and stroke average (71.89). Voke was a two-time Ping All-Central Region pick (2016, 2017) and made the All-Big 12 team in 2016.
Kinney was an All-American and qualified for the NCAA Championship as an individual in 2019 after winning the NCAA Louisville Regional. Kinney was a four-time NCAA Regional qualifier and the only Cyclone in school history ot appear in three NCAA Championships.Â
Iowa State ended the 2018-19 season ranked in the nation’s top-40 and qualified for the NCAA Regional. The Cyclones narrowly missed out on their third-straight NCAA finals berth, but had representative at the NCAA Championship when Kinney won medalist honors at the NCAA Louisville Regional.
Kinney had a fantastic 2018-19 campaign, breaking ISU’s season stroke average mark (71.08), earning Big 12 All-Tournament honors and making the 54-hole cut at the NCAA Championship, tying for 47th. Kinney was an All-Central Region selection and Honorable Mention All-American pick by Ping.Â
Kinney bested his own season scoring mark in the shortened 2019-20 season by averaging 70.89 strokes per round.Â
The Cyclones won two tournaments down the stretch in 2017-18 and placed fourth at the Big 12 Championship, tying for their second-best finish in conference history. Sam Vincent earned Big 12 All-Tournament honors by tying for fifth.
Tank’s team made a late-season surge to earn a spot at the NCAA Pacific Regional. ISU capitalized by finishing third behind a pair of top-10 performances from Vincent and Denzel Ieremia to advance to its second consecutive NCAA finals.
ISU, which ended the year ranked No. 47 nationally by Golfweek, went on to tie for 19th at the national meet, as freshman Lachlan Barker led the way by tying for 50th. Barker finished the season with a rookie school-record scoring mark of 72.14.
The 2016-17 season was one of the finest in school history. ISU won three tournament titles, the most since the 1996-97 season, and produced three individual medalists. With his second NCAA Championship berth on the line at the NCAA Austin Regional, ISU responded with a school-record 263 (21-under) in the final round to tie for its best finish in an NCAA postseason event (third place).
Voke solidified his status as one of the best in school history by winning medalist honors at the NCAA Austin Regional, shattering school records for low 18-hole round (61) and low 54-hole score (199).
ISU went on to tie for 18th at the national tournament, as Ieremia made the 54-hole cut as an individual and tied for 47th in the stroke play competition.
The 2015-16 season saw Voke qualify for an NCAA Regional as an individual. The Cyclones won two tournament titles, establishing the school record for best 54-hole team score in a victory at the Desert Shootout (823)
In 2014-15, the Cyclones ended the season ranked in the nation’s top-40, placed fourth at the Big 12 Championship, tying for their second-best finish in school history, and advanced to NCAA Regional competition. Fernandez and Voke each won two individual tournament titles and were named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team.
In his fourth season as the Cyclone mentor in 2013-14, the Cyclones broke through nationally. Five runner-up finishes, an appearance in the national rankings and a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship, the school’s best finish at the Big 12 meet since 1997, highlighted the regular season.
Tank and his Cyclones then put an exclamation mark on the outstanding 2013-14 campaign by earning a spot in the NCAA Championship, ISU’s first appearance at the national tournament since 1953. The Cyclones made it to the Big Dance by tying for fourth at the NCAA Columbia Regional behind a final-round 270.
Tank made an immediate impact on the program when he took over the reins of the program in 2010. In his second season, he led Iowa State to the 2012 NCAA Regional, its first appearance since 1999.
Recruiting at Iowa State has attained new heights under Tank, especially in its overseas outreach. His first recruiting class finished the season ninth in Golfstat’s Freshman Class Impact Rankings. It included Fernandez (Granada, Spain), Duncan Croudis (Dunedin, New Zealand), and Sam Daley (Wynnum, Australia).
Voke (Auckland, New Zealand), Ruben Sondjaja (Sydney, Australia), Ieremia (Hamilton, New Zealand), Vincent (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Barker (Willunga, Australia) continued ISU’s success on the international level. Sondjaja earned all-tournament honors at the Big 12 Championship in 2014 and ended his career with 12 top-10 finishes. Ieremia won his first career tournament title in 2016 and made the 54-hole cut as an individual at the NCAA Championship, tying for 47th at the national meet. He ended his career with 13 top-10 finishes, tying for sixth in school history. Â
Many of Tank’s former players have found success professionally. Fernandez Voke and Ieremia are active on tours around the world. Fernandez has been a competitor on the European Tour, while Voke continues to gain high status on the Korn Ferry Tour. Lachlan Barker is a member of the PGA Australia Tour.
Tank has proven successful at developing players and considered by many to be one of the top young coaches in the country. He has worked with a number of top amateurs and professionals, many of whom compete on the PGA, Korn Ferry, European, Australian, Asian and Canadian Tours.
Prior to Iowa State, Tank spent eight seasons as an assistant to Brad James on the Minnesota men's golf staff. During his time in Minneapolis, Tank helped mentor 10 All-America selections and 16 All-Big Ten picks. Minnesota solidified itself as a northern golf power in Tank's eight years with the program, winning Big Ten titles in 2003 and 2007, and finishing runner-up at the conference meet in 2006, 2008 and 2009. The Gophers made six NCAA Regional berths and advanced to the NCAA Championships three times, finishing third in 2006 and ninth in 2007.
A 2002 graduate of Minnesota, Tank continued his academic career by pursuing graduate work at Minnesota in sports psychology and motor learning. He has studied the links between physical body and the golf swing, and in November of 2007, he became the first golf professional in Minnesota to earn Level II TPI Golf Fitness Certification.
Tank's collegiate golf career began in 1997 where he was a letterwinner and scholar-athlete award winner as a member of the Gopher golf team. Tank was the captain of Minnesota's 2002 NCAA Championship team. That team won the school's first conference title in 30 years and is the only northern program to win a NCAA title since 1979.
Tank prepped at Dowling High School in West Des Moines, helping the Maroons to four state tournament appearances, including two Class 4A state titles in 1994 and 1995. A former Des Moines City Junior champion, Tank has played in numerous amateur events and American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournaments.
Tank is married to the former Kristie Maruyama. The couple have two sons: George and Charlie.
