AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (5-4) looks to complete the in-state sweep in a matchup versus UNI (4-5) Tuesday night. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m. as Hilton Coliseum plays host. The last time Iowa State played and won against Iowa, Drake and UNI in the same season happened in 2009.
Tomorrow night's ticket promotion is 2-1 Tuesday where fans can buy one reserved or general admission ticket and get one free. For students, 'Rise Above' shirts and free pizza will be given away.
LAST TIME OUT
The Cyclones swept the Cardinal and Gold Challenge with wins against Drake, Iowa and Wright State. Brooke Stonestreet, Solei Thomas and MVP Eleanor Holthaus were named to the All-Tournament team.
Libero Stonestreet matched her career high of 21 digs to open the tournament versus Drake and followed that up with setting a new career-high 23 digs in the next match against Iowa. The sophomore averaged 5.50 digs per set on the week with her two 20-plus dig performances.
Thomas tallied her 800th career kill in the midst of ISU entering a scoring run to rally back and take the lead in the fourth set as the Cyclones went on to win the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, 3-1.
Holthaus commanded the court as she delivered 48 kills at an efficiency of .366 through the three matches. In the Wright State match, Holthaus notched her first double-double of the season with 17 kills and 10 digs. The fifth-year senior made the move up to now hold the sixth-most career kills in school history with 1,248. Holthaus also upgrades to No. 7 on the most 10+ kill matches as she has totaled 63 in her career.
ISU held an opponent to 15 set points or less in back-to-back games against Troy and Drake. Iowa State held Troy to 11 points in the third and Drake to 13 points in the first. The last time the Cyclones did so was Sept. 15 and 17 last season against UNI and St. Thomas. Iowa State also held Wright State to 14 points in the first set this season.
Following Cardinal and Gold challenge action, Iowa State ranks 23rd nationally with an average of 2.72 blocks per set. Freshman Kelsey Perry holds the top spot in the Big 12 with 1.57 blocks per set.
UNI
UNI enters the contest with a 4-5 record. The Panthers also met Creighton this season, where UNI lost by a sweep. Northern Iowa notably won a set against No. 25 Southern California with help from 15 kills in the second frame of the game. The Panthers have met three ranked opponents this season.
Iowa State leads the all-time series 30-28 and holds a record of 13-12 at Hilton. Head Coach Christy Johnson-Lynch is 13-4 against the Panthers.
NEXT UP
The Cyclones travel to the Billiken Classic this weekend held in St. Louis. ISU first meets Kansas City Friday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. On Saturday, Iowa State has a double-header with matchups against Missouri State at 1 p.m. and St. Louis at 7 p.m. The St. Louis match will be streamed on ESPN+. Conference play begins following the tournament on Sept. 24 against TCU.
