AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (5-5) took the loss in the in-state battle against UNI (5-5) by a score of 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 19-25). Jaden Newsome improved her Iowa State career total assist ranking as she tallied 13 in the matchup.
Newsome shifted up to No. 14 in program history as she now holds 1,314 on her Iowa State career. Eleanor Holthaus also added to her program ranking as she ended the match with three total blocks to now sit two away from the 14th-most in school history, holding 303.
Morgan Brandt got the start at setter and marked it with her first career ace in the second set to total the third ace of the frame. Brandt also hit a career-high 23 assists.
Allie Petry made her second-consecutive start at libero and totaled 28 digs, two assists and an ace. It was the first game since Oct. 31, 2021 a Cyclone tallied at least 25 digs.
Freshman Maya Duckworth notched the fourth game of her career with double-digit kills as she hit 12 while Solei Thomas set the next highest with 10. Thomas notched her 40th career game with 10 or more kills with the total.
SET ONE
Iowa State and UNI traded kills for each team's first point to start. The Panthers and Cyclones kept it even up through a tie at 15-15. A UNI block sent the Panthers on the way to grab three-consecutive points as the Panthers were the first to get to 20 points. Mariah Mitchell hit a kill to fight off set point before UNI took the set 25-18. Both teams hit under .200 on the set while ISU totaled nine errors.
SET TWO
Northern Iowa jumped out to a lead of three before a Panther service error halted their run. UNI's Emily Holtherhaus hit her sixth kill of the game to put the Panthers ahead at 7-3 before a Kate Shannon ace brought the Cyclones within one at 10-9. Northern Iowa then hit another scoring run to go ahead 12-7. Newsome tallied her sixth assist of the game at 12-8 to make the move to No. 14 in program history. ISU then rattled off two blocks, three kills and two aces to battle back from being down five to make it 17-15. ISU got their first lead at 22-21 and went on to take the set 25-22 to complete the rally.
SET THREE
Jordan Hopp and Holthaus teamed up for the block to put the Cyclones on the board as each tallied their third of the game. The Panthers took the early lead at 9-3 as Iowa State called a timeout. UNI continued to control the set, going up by five at 19-14. Duckworth hit her second ace to add another ISU point, but UNI ultimately took set three on an Iowa State service error at 25-20.
SET FOUR
The Cyclones went up by two to start up the fourth before UNI tied it up. A Kelsey Perry kill again put Iowa State ahead by two as Northern Iowa battled ahead to 9-5 on a 4-0 scoring run. Two straight blocks by Maya Duckworth and Kelsey Perry forced a UNI timeout as the Panthers led 17-12. Perry totaled two solo, a career high, and four assists to lead both teams. Offensive struggles continued as UNI took the win in four sets. Iowa State hit just over .100 on the match.
NEXT UP
The Cyclones travel to the Billiken Classic this weekend held in St. Louis. ISU first meets Kansas City Friday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. On Saturday, Iowa State has a double-header with matchups against Missouri State at 1 p.m. and St. Louis at 7 p.m. The St. Louis match will be streamed on ESPN+. Conference play begins following the tournament on Sept. 24 against TCU.
