ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Iowa State (6-5) reverse swept Kansas City (3-8) by a score of 3-2 (19-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 15-10) Friday afternoon to kick off the Billiken Invitational. Three Cyclones hit over 10 kills, including a career-high 16 by Maya Duckworth.
In the Cyclones' second reverse sweep of the season, Duckworth led both teams with her total of 16 kills, while Solei Thomas delivered 12 and Eleanor Holthaus hit 11. Mariah Mitchell narrowly missed double digits with nine.
SET ONE
Kansas City got off to a 5-1 advantage before two straight ISU blocks led to the Cyclones going on a run to tie it up. Iowa State got their first lead at 9-8 as the teams continued to tie each other up. The Roos hitting over .300 brought them ahead, making it to set point at 24-17. The Cyclones fought off two decisive points but Kansas City pulled ahead by a set score of 25-19 while ISU was held to .061 hitting.
SET TWO
Both sides kept it even through the beginning of the frame before Holthaus delivered the ace to send ISU to grab the next five points. Thomas converted her second kill on just three attempts in the run as Holthaus served up another ace in the frame to extend the Cyclones' lead and match the individual season set best for aces. Kansas City evened the score hitting over .300. The Roos once again found 20 points first and went on to take the second 25-20.
SET THREE
The Cyclones grabbed the first point on a Thomas kill before the Roos took a 4-0 scoring run as Kansas City's Raina Smith collected her 10th kill of the match. The Cyclones capped a long rally with a Mitchell kill to come within two as Kansas City led 9-7. Mitchell extended her run to hit three in a row as Holthaus and Abby Greiman followed suite with kills of their own to tie it at 12. Duckworth brought the lead to ISU with her 10th kill. The scoring run built to 6-0 on Holthaus' third ace of the game, matching her career high, to bring ISU's lead to 15-12. ISU pressed on, taking the set 25-17 while tallying 15 kills and holding the Roos to .081 hitting in the frame.
SET FOUR
Alexis Engelbrecht brought the tie on at 7 with a solo block and stepped to the service line the next play to collect an ace and the Cyclone lead. Greiman then sent over two kills while Thomas followed for the third consecutive to bring the score to 13-10. Duckworth set a new career high with her 13th kill of the game to bring Iowa State's advantage to four at 16-12. Greiman then totaled the fifth solo block of the match to stretch the lead to seven. A fifth set was forced with Iowa State hitting .389 while totaling 17 kills in the set.
SET FIVE
The Roos claimed the first two points, but the Cyclones responded on a 7-0 scoring run including the sixth Cyclone solo block, put up by Thomas. Teams switched sides as ISU led 8-4 as three Cyclones held 10 or more kills. Iowa State continued rolling to pull off the reverse sweep by a score of 15-10.
