MIAMI, Fla. – No. 24 Iowa State (4-1) made program history on Sunday, storming back late for a second-straight day to defeat No. 10 Miami (FL) (2-1), 4-3, claiming a spot in the ITA Indoor National Championships in Seattle Feb. 10-13.
Less than 24 hours after earning the highest ranked win in program history, the Cyclones would turn around and do it again beating the tenth ranked team in the country, and, as with Saturday's victory over No. 18 UCLA, it didn't come easy.
After falling behind 3-1 in the team score, the Iowa State would rally back and win the final three singles matches to defeat the Hurricanes. This is the first time in program history that the Cyclones have qualified for the ITA National Indoor Championships.
"One of the best moments in coaching is not always winning. It's watching your team choose to fight instead of cave, to believe in one another instead of falter," Head Coach Boomer Saia said. "I can't put into words how proud I am of this group! We've been through a lot and to watch them come together in the biggest of moments was incredible. This weekend was a complete group effort, and we are excited to go compete at indoors."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Iowa State started off the day strong by clinching the doubles point. Sofia Cabezas and Miska Kadleckova were the first duo to finish, beating Miami's Audrey Boch-Collins and Mia Mack, 6-3, earning their ninth doubles victory on the year.
At the No. 1 double spot, Thasaporn Naklo and Anna Supapitch Kuearum defeated Daevenia Achong and Maya Tahan, 6-4, earning the doubles point for the Cyclones. Sophomore Ange Oby Kajuru and newcomer Xinyi Nong were trailing Alexa Noel and Isabella Pfennig, 4-5, at the time Iowa State clinched the doubles point.
Iowa State would drop its first three singles matches. Chie Kezuka was the first to finish, losing her match the No. 6 spot to Tahan, 6-2, 6-1. Then, sophomore Supapitch Kuearum lost at the No. 3 spot to No. 123 Pfennig, 6-3, 6-4. No. 114 ranked Cabezas fell at the No. 5 spot to Mack, 7-5, 6-4, putting Miami up 3-1 in the team score.
Kadleckova extended her singles winning streak to seven matches after defeating Boch-Collins comfortably, 6-3, 6-4, giving Iowa State a point back in the team score.
After dropping the first set to No. 14 Noel, Naklo battled back and won her singles match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. With her win, No. 24 Iowa State was tied, 3-3, with No. 10 Miami and the drama at No. 2 singles already playing out.
Kajuru struggled early against No. 60 Achong. After losing the first set, the sophomore from Tokyo, Japan rallied, defeating her opponent, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, to clinch the match for the Cyclones and send them to the ITA Indoor National Championships.
