PROVO, Utah – Iowa State (13-5, 4-3 Big 12) dropped the match 3-0 (14-25, 17-25, 18-25) to No. 9 BYU (17-3, 6-2 Big 12) Thursday in the first meeting in series history between the teams.
The Cyclones were outhit .370-.089, tallying 23 attack errors compared to the home team's nine. BYU was led by Erin Livingston with 15 kills at a hitting percentage of .542.
Maya Duckworth led Iowa State with 10 kills, her 30th-career double-figure match and fifth of the season.
SET ONE
Duckworth put her second kill down on two swings to begin the match tied at 3-3. After the Cyclones fell behind 4-7, Iowa State took the next three capped by an ace by Morgan Brandt to tie things at 8-8. BYU took control of the set from there, hitting a scoring run of 11 powered by hitting over .400 to go up 19-8. ISU couldn't pull off the comeback as BYU took the opening set 25-14.
SET TWO
Jordan Hopp and Brandt put up the block while Duckworth followed to put down her sixth kill to make it 4-4 early in the set. Duckworth notched another as ISU neared BYU's lead (7-5), while Alexis Engelbrecht followed to put up a wall to knot the score 8-8. BYU took possession of the advantage from there, finding 20 points while Iowa State held 13. ISU was held to an efficiency under .100 as BYU went ahead 25-17.
SET THREE
Nayeli Gonzalez put down her sixth kill followed by an ace to come within a point of BYU at 6-5. Duckworth fought to keep the Cyclones in it with a solo block, Iowa State's sixth total block, to make it 7-6, BYU. A successful ISU challenge kept ISU within one at 8-7, with Duckworth tallying her eighth kill. The set then saw ties at 8s, 9s and 10s before Iowa State took its first lead at 11-10 on an ace by Brooke Stonestreet. With ISU up 13-12, the Cougars hit a run of five to retake the lead. BYU held the advantage from there, sealing the sweep with a set score of 25-18.
