Craig, Jackson Break DakotaDome Pool Records in win over South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. - The Iowa State swimming and diving team (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) captured their first win of the season beating South Dakota (3-4, 2-0 Summit League) by a score of 151.5-148.5. The Cyclones set two DakotaDome pool records on their way to improving their all-time season record to 15-0.Â
"It was a close meet tonight and South Dakota was a very strong opponent." head coach Duane Sorenson said. "I'm proud of our women with the way they continued to fight and found a way to get a huge victory."
Sydney Jackson won the Cyclone's first event finishing in first (9:10.98) in the 800 meter free. Jackson's time broke the DakotaDome record in the 800 meter free.Â
"Sydney swam a smart race in the 800 meter free. She was third at the halfway mark and she found a second gear which was huge for us that early in the race." coach Sorenson said.
Corinne Guist finished in second (9:12.96) less than two seconds behind Jackson.Â
Guist had another second-place finish in the 400 meter free finishing less than three seconds behind Brinley Horras who placed first with a final time of 4:27.53.Â
Winter Craig secured her first victory of the season winning the 200 meter fly with a time of 2:19.84. Craig broke her own DakotaDome pool record of 2:20.31 she set in 2021 against South Dakota. Craig finished nearly three seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Freshman Emma Kuhn won her second backstroke event of the season finishing with a time of 1:04.98 in the 100 meter backstroke. Maddie Ziegert tied for second place with a South Dakota swimmer, both finishing at 1:05.27.Â
Fallon DeWitt and Madi Dohrn had a photo finish in the 200 meter back with DeWitt (2:21.05) finishing less than a tenth of a second in front of Dohrn (2:21.10) to win the event.Â
"Fallon and Madi getting first and second place was critical for us to win tonight." coach Sorenson said. "I'm proud of their effort and ability to step up in that position."Â Â
In diving, Lauren Kimball had a very strong night securing a zone diving cut in the 1-meter dive with a score of 274.73.Â
"It was a great performance from Lauren tonight in a spot where we needed someone to step up." head diving coach Jeff Warwick said. "Getting a zone cut this early in the season is a great sign for her and I can't wait to see where she takes it from here."Â
The score was enough for Kimball to place first in the event for Iowa State. Sophomore Ally Blumenfeld had a good night on the 1-meter board as well getting her first top-three finish of the year in third place.
Kate Mitchell finished first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 277.20. Kimball and Blumenfeld finished behind Mitchell in third and fourth place.Â

In the 200 meter freestyle relay, the Cyclones had a team of Carley Caughron, Ziegert, Lydia McClugage, and Andie Quirke finish in second place with a time of 1:47.65 to secure the first victory of the season for Iowa State.Â

The Cyclones will continue their road trip tomorrow in a meeting with South Dakota State in Brookings to close out the month of October.Â
