AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) will go on the road to take on South Dakota (3-3, 2-0 Summit) on Friday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. in Vermillion, S.D. at the DakotaDome Pool. The team will stay on the road to face South Dakota State (2-1, 0-0 Summit) on Saturday Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. in Brookings S.D. at the Marshall Center Pool.
THE OPPONENT - South Dakota
The Cyclones are undefeated in their series history against South Dakota posting an all-time 14-0 record. The last meeting between the two schools in 2022 saw the Cyclones pick up a 191-102 win in Ames.
South Dakota comes into the meet with three wins, including a 2-0 start in the Summit League with dominant wins against St. Thomas and Lindenwood, along with three losses to Minnesota, Nebraska, and Kansas. Sophomore swimmer Taylor Buhr has had a strong start to her season placing in the top three in eight events, winning five, and earning the Summit League swimmer of the week.
THE OPPONENT- South Dakota State
Iowa State also holds an undefeated all-time record against the Jackrabbits at 13-0. The last meeting saw the Cyclones win 185-100 in Ames.
South Dakota State starts off their 2023-24 campaign with home wins against Augustana and Iowa Central and a loss to Nebraska in Lincoln. South Dakota State will have a meet against Minnesota and St. Thomas on Friday in Minneapolis before returning home to face Iowa State on Saturday.
Sianne Downes has had a strong start to the year in the backstroke event, winning in the 100 back once and 200 back twice across the Jackrabbits first three meets.
LAST TIME - Nebraska
The Cyclones had strong performances in the freestyle events against Nebraska. Junior Carley Caughron won the 50 free and 100 free events while senior Brinley Horras won the 200 free. Iowa State also had strong performances in the distance freestyle events taking second and third place in both the 500 and 1000 free.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR - Backstroke
Iowa State had a great meet in the backstroke sweeping the top three spots in the event with freshman Emma Kuhn winning the event. The Cyclones took second and third in the 200 backstroke to cap off strong performances. With South Dakota and South Dakota State having strong backstroke swimmers, these events could be the deciding factor in both meets.
ON DECK - Hawkeye Invite
Iowa State will travel to Iowa City to participate in the 2023 Hawkeye Invite that takes place Nov. 30-Dec 2. Participants in the invite will include Iowa, Colorado State, New Mexico State, Rutgers, and Nebraska.
