Cyclones Beat South Dakota State 202-96, Improve to 2-1

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) beat South Dakota State (3-3, 1-0 Summit League) by a score of 202-96 to secure the team's second win of the season. The Cyclones had first place finishers in the final 12 events of the meet to cap off a strong team performance and end of the South Dakota road trip.Â
"The team had another strong performance today that was consistent from start to finish." head coach Duane Sorenson said,
Iowa State took the top three spots in the 1000 free to start the meet off strong. Brinley Horras took first with a time of 10:33.78 while Maddy Rundell (10:45.81) and Mallory Miller (10:49.81) took second and third.Â
In the 200 free, Corinne Guist placed first with a time of 1:56.97 in her first 200 free event of the 2023-24 season. Andie Quirke (1:58.52) followed behind her in third beating a South Dakota State swimmer by less than a tenth of a second.Â
Alaina Breitbach had a strong day for Iowa State, picking up her first wins of the season in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke.Â
"Alaina made some corrections from a few weeks ago and they are starting to take shape with performances like the ones she had today." Sorenson said.Â
Emma Kuhn also performed well in the 100 breaststroke finishing less than a second off Breitbach's winning time. Kuhn capped off her day with an excellent performance in the 200 IM, finishing in first with a time of 2:08.94, over five seconds faster than the second-place finisher.Â
Winter Craig followed her record-breaking performance in the 200 fly Friday with another win in the same event finishing with a time of 2:09.26. Sydney Jackson followed behind her in second with a time of 2:11.12.Â
The 50 yard free saw another top-three sweep for the Cyclones with Carley Caughron (24.38), Maddie Ziegert (24.79), and Lydia McClugage (24.83) finishing in the top three spots. Caughron secured another first place finish in the 100 fly.Â
The 100 free saw senior Andie Quirke win her first individual event of the season with a time of 52.96. Horras (54.06) finished in second and McClugage (54.57) just missed the top three with a fourth-place finish.Â
Fallon DeWitt and Sydney Jackson secured their second wins of the year in the 200 backstroke and 500 free respectively.Â
Iowa State also took first place in both relays to give the team a strong start and finish to an excellent team performance.Â
In diving, Lauren Kimball had another strong performance, this time on the 3-meter board where she set a new personal best with a 303.65 score. Kimball has secured zone diving cuts in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events during the road trip to South Dakota.Â
Ally Blumenfeld won her first event of the year in the 1-meter dive putting up a score of 257.35 to secure first. Kate Mitchell followed close behind Blumenfeld to secure second-place for the Cyclones.Â
ON DECK - Hawkeye InviteÂ
Iowa State will travel to Iowa City to participate in the Hawkeye Invite taking place from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. The Cyclones will compete with five other teams, including Iowa and Nebraska, across the invite.Â
