IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa State closed out the 2023 Hawkeye Invite with another first place finish in diving followed by several strong performances across the swimming finals to close out the weekend.Â
Kate Mitchell, Ally Blumenfeld, and Annie McCann competed in the platform diving finals for the Cyclones. Mitchell took first place in the event, including securing a new personal best of 212.50 on the platform. Blumenfeld was right behind Mitchell taking second place with a 206.70 score and McCann put up a respectable 199.95 score in her first platform dive in college, leading to a fourth place finish.Â
"They all had a really good day and executed at the level I wanted them to." Head diving coach Jeff Warrick said.Â
The Iowa State Diving team dominated the weekend at the Hawkeye Invite, recording first place in all three finals and nine zone diving cuts overall.Â
"The team has a strong bond between themselves and a great love for diving, which makes me believe that they can keep this level up as the season continues." Warrick said.Â
Brinley Horras led the swimming team in the first 1650 freestyle of the year with a time of 16:59.78 and sixth place overall. Other Cyclone finishers included Corinne Guist (17:09.07) in 10th, Sydney Jackson (17:12.91) in 11th, and Maddy Rundell (17:19.41) in 13th.Â
"Distance swimming is a strength of our team and it showed again today." head coach Duane Sorenson said. "We've trained that hard and it's great to get that look at the event in competition at this point of the year."Â
Three Cyclone swimmers competed in the 200 backstroke 'B' final. Fallon DeWitt led the group finishing in 4th with a 2:02.03 time. Freshman Emma Kuhn put up a time of 2:02.86 in the final, which placed her 20th in the all-time top performers list at the 200 backstroke.Â
In the 100 free prelims, Andie Quirke recorded a personal best time of 50.90 to secure a spot in the 'A' finals. Carley Caughron was close behind her with a 51.17 prelim time.Â
In the finals session, Corinne Guist won the 'D' final putting up a personal best of 52.16 while Quirke finished in fifth place overall.Â
Quirke followed up her performance with a 50.98 time in the 'A' final, securing fifth overall to cap off a strong weekend. Caughron (51.91) placed sixth in the 'B' final to finish her weekend.Â
Sydney Jackson led four Cyclones that participated in the 'B' final of the 200 yard breaststroke finishing 10th with a 2:19.22 time. Alaina Breitbach (2:21.26) finished 11th, Abbi Crum (2:22.91) finished 13th, and Maddy Rundell (2:24.35) finished in 15th.Â
Craig finished seventh overall in the 200 fly prelims with a 2:03.90. In the finals, Craig finished in eighth at a 2:04.03 time while Mallory Miller finished in 17th at a 2:08.12 time.
A relay team of Caughron, Quirke, Ashley Bengtson, and Maddie Ziegert placed fifth in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:25.49 to close out the invite. The effort was good enough for the Cyclones to earn fourth overall in the Hawkeye Invite with 518 total team points.
"We got a lot of this meet facing two top Big Ten schools along with some other strong swimming programs and just came up a little bit short of where we wanted to." Sorenson said. "We had some people who had strong breakout meets and we will look to build on that as we head to Big 12 competition and the Big 12 Championships."

The Cyclones will head back to Ames and welcome the Iowa Hawkeyes for the 2023 edition of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series Friday Dec 8, at 6 p.m. at Beyer Hall.Â
