AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-2, 0-0 Big 12) lost a close matchup to the Iowa Hawkeyes (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) by a score of 179-121 to close out their 2023 schedule.
In the 200 Medley Relay, a team of Emma Kuhn, Paige Hanley, Carley Caughron, and Andie Quirke finished with a time of 1:42.96 earning second overall in the event.Â
Brinley Horras won the first individual swimming event of the night with a 10:04.89 time in the 1000 free.Â
Fallon DeWitt led the Cyclones in the 200 free with a third-place finish less than half a second out of second place. DeWitt later secured a personal best in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.78.Â
"Fallon had a strong meet tonight across the board, which was a lot of fun to see." head coach Duane Sorenson said.Â
In the 200 back, DeWitt finished in second place with a time of 2:00.08, less than one tenth of a second off her personal best in the event.Â
Maddie Ziegert set a new personal best of 56.46 to finish in third place while Kuhn secured a 56.48 time in the event, her best as a Cyclone.Â
In the 100 breaststroke, Alaina Breitbach finished in second with a time of 1:03.57. Paige Hanley (1:03.75) and Abbi Crum (1:05.74) followed closely behind for third and fourth-place finishes respectively.Â
Quirke was the highest finisher for the Cyclones in the 50 free, securing second place with a time of 23.57. Caughron was in hot pursuit of Quirke in the race finishing in third at 23.59 seconds.Â
Caughron later led Iowa State in the 100 fly with a 55.04 finish, earning her second place.Â
Quirke followed that performance up with a 51.55 time in the 100 free, which tied her with an Iowa swimmer for first place in the event. Senior Ashley Bengtson finished in third place in her first dual meet performance of the season.Â
Iowa State had second, third, and fourth-place finishes in the 200 breaststroke. Breitbach led the way for the Cyclones with a time of 2:20.18. Maddy Rundell (2:23.70) finished in third and Hanley (2:26.09) finished in fourth.Â
The Cyclones had another second, third, and fourth-place finish in the 500 free. Horras led the way with a time of 4:56.53 while Guist (4:57.41) and Jackson (4:57.54) rounding out the top four.Â
"You have to swim to your strengths in these matchups and we are doing a really good job of that in the distance events." Sorenson said.Â
In diving, Lauren Kimball continued her historic stretch on the 3-meter dive with a score of 325.80, the highest a Cyclone has ever scored in Beyer Hall. Kimball set a new personal best with her effort along with breaking her No. 4 all-time top performers spot set by a 325.30 score at last week's Hawkeye Invite. Kimball's score earned her a second-place finish on the 3-meter board, less than four points off first place.Â
"Lauren's hard work and perseverance are paying off." head diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "She listens well and makes changes to be the best she can be and a lot of that has clicked and showed up for her in these events."Â
In the 1-meter dive, Kimball (288.60) led the Cyclones with another second-place finish while Joscelyn Farner (272.20) and Ally Blumenfeld (265.20) secured zone diving cuts in the event.Â
"It was a great head-to-head matchup tonight and overall our divers had a great night against a fantastic Hawkeye team." Warrick said.Â
Freshman Annie McCann put up her best performance at Iowa State with a score of 247.45 in her exhibition performance on the 3-meter board.
Iowa State ended the night with a second-place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a 3:24.45 finish from a team of Caughron, Ziegert, Bengtson, and Quirke.Â
"We raced really hard tonight and had several strong performances but came up short in too many races in the end." Sorenson said.
Iowa State will open 2024 on the road, traveling to UNI to take on the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 13.
