CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-2, 0-0 Big 12) earned a hard-fought victory against the UNI Panthers (10-2, 0-0 MVC) by a score of 162-138 to start their 2024 slate. Â
"I'm pleased with the way we raced and performed today," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "With the conditions outside and an irregular pattern than we have been used to with diving starting before swimming, I thought we handled things well throughout the meet today."
The Cyclone diving team started the day strong in 3-meter diving by securing the top three finishes. Lauren Kimball led the way, finishing in first with a score of 285.83. The finish earned Kimball her fifth win of the season in all competitions. Ally Blumenfeld (280.88) and Kate Mitchell (278.85) finished in second and third respectively. Kimball and Blumenfeld secured zone diving cuts with their scores.Â
"Ally Blumenfeld put together a series of consistent dives through her performance today," head diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "She's put in the time during her training to be more consistent and that helped her out today."Â Â
In 1-meter diving, Joscelyn Farner earned first place with a 271.05 final score. The performance acquired Farner's fourth zone diving cut of the season on the 1-meter board. Kimball and Mitchell followed behind Farner in third and fourth place.Â
"Joscelyn is someone who has benefited from years of diving experience and dives like today show that she knows how to perform and correct mistakes to put up strong, consistent dives." Warrick said.Â
The diving team kept up their strong season with today marking their fourth meet where they have taken first place in at least one of the events.Â
"It was good to be back and competing today and to see where we are heading into our Big 12 meets coming up." Warrick said.Â
Iowa State started their afternoon in the swimming session with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. A combined effort from Maddie Ziegert, Paige Hanley, Carley Caughron, and Andie Quirke, helped the Cyclones to a final time of 1:45.97.Â
Hanley would go on to finish in first place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.15 to secure her first ever collegiate swimming victory.
"Paige has learned from some of the past great breaststroke swimmers at this school and has made the most of her opportunities this year in the relay and breaststroke events," Sorenson said. "It was a very cool moment today to see her get her first collegiate win today."Â
Caughron would also claim a first-place finish in the 100 fly at a time of 56.31.Â
In the 1000 free, Corinne Guist (10:27.17) and Sydney Jackson (10:34.23) earned the Cyclones first and second place and 13 team points early in the meet.Â
Guist would be a crucial component in the 500 free as a part of the three Cyclones that took the top three spots in the event. Brinley Horras finished in first while Ashley Bengtson finished in third as a part of the Cyclone tandem in the event.
"Corinne had several important races today where she did well and it's great to see her effort pay off." Sorenson said.
Winter Craig and Mallory Miller finished first and second in the 200 fly to pick up another crucial 13 points early in the race that played a key role in securing a victory for the Cyclones.Â
"Overall, we had a good meet today with diving helping to set an early tone with their victories and swam well in those early races and ended the day with a few key wins." Sorenson said.Â
Iowa State returns to Beyer Pool next Saturday at 11 a.m. to take on TCU and start Big 12 play.Â
