STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 10 Iowa State took down No. 17 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, earning the first program victory against the Cowgirls in school history and downing the first-place team in the Big 12 Friday evening. The Cyclones improve to 14-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Entering tonight's match against the Cowgirls, Iowa State was winless in the all-time series at 0-49. After the win, head coach Boomer Saia and his team are now one of four teams in the Big 12 with only one conference loss.
"Our group showed unbelievable resilience in one of the toughest environments to play in in the country," Saia said. "What this group accomplished tonight is no easy feat and we showed real Cyclone grit in the biggest of moments. I'm so proud of the step this team took tonight and I feel lucky to be able to coach these players."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Iowa State started off the match with momentum built after winning the doubles point.
With wins on courts No. 2 and No. 3, the Cyclones took a, 1-0, lead headed into singles play.
To open singles play, Sofia Rojas defeated Chie Kezuka, 6-0, 6-2, to even it at 1-1 in the team score.
No. 96 Miska Kadleckova was the first to score in singles for Iowa State on court No. 3. The junior picked up her 25thsingles victory on the year with a, 6-3, 6-3, victory over the Cowgirl's Lucia Peyre.
After No. 17 Oklahoma State was able to get another point back in the team score, senior Thasaporn Naklo got a point back for Iowa State with a, 6-4, 6-4, win over Kristina Novak on court No. 1. This was Naklo's 11th career conference singles victory, moving her up to a tie for sixth in the record books.
Clinching the victory for Saia and his squad was Anna Supapitch Kuearum on court No. 4. The sophomore battled to the end, earning her 16th singles win of the year over Martina Zerulo, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
Iowa State improved to 13-0 this season when winning the doubles point.
Iowa State will be back in action Sunday at 11 a.m. when they take on No. 23 Oklahoma.
