ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 12 Iowa State (21-6, 7-2 Big 12) saw its historic season come to an end in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament Wednesday night at the USTA National Campus. The Cyclones, who made their first national quarterfinal appearance in program history, fell, 4-3, to No. 3 seeded and 4th-ranked NC State (27-4, 10-3 ACC).
Despite losing the doubles point, Iowa State managed to take the Wolfpack to the brink. The Cyclones fell behind 2-0 in the dual but secured wins at No. 2, 4 and 5 singles to take a 3-2 lead.
NC State would shut the door, however, by taking the No. 3 and 6 singles matches, both of which went to three sets.
How it Happened
Iowa State lost the doubles point for just the sixth time in 27 matches. NC State picked up a win at the No. 3 spot when Sophie Abrams and Abigail Rencheli downed Sofia Cabezas and Miska Kadleckova, 6-2. In the top doubles slot, the No. 4 ranked Wolfpack pair of Diana Shnaider and Alana Smith cliched the point by defeating the Cyclone duo of Anna Supapitch Kuearum and Thasaporn Naklo, 6-3.
Xinyi Nong and Ange Oby Kajuru were on the brink of defeating the No. 9 ranked doubles team of Nell Miller and Amelia Rajecki, leading 5-3 before the match was abandoned.
NC State extended its dual lead to 2-0 with a win at the No. 1 singles spot where No. 7 Shnaider defeated No. 60 Naklo, 6-0, 6-0.
Supapitch Kuearum got Iowa State on the board at the No. 4 singles spot. The sophomore upset No. 87 Rencheli, 6-2, 6-4, after digging out of a 0-3 hole in the second set.
Cabezas drew the Cyclones level in the dual with a 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory over Abrams at the No. 5 singles spot.
At the No. 2 slot, Kajuru put the Cyclones in front with a gutty win over No. 13 Smith, 7-5, 6-4. It marked Kajuru's 21st win in her last 24 matches.

NC State tied the dual again with a win at the No. 6 spot. Gina Dittmann defeated Chie Kezuka in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
A battle at No. 3 singles between Kadleckova and No. 26 Rajecki would decide the dual. Kadleckova held a 2-0 lead in the third set but couldn't fend off her opponent's rally as Rajecki took the match, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3.
