AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's cross country team completed the sweep of the Cyclone Preview on Friday morning with six top-10 finishers en route to a team victory. The USTFCCCA No. 25 Cyclones won the first regular season meet held in Ames while Silas Winders was the individual champion of the 6K race.
"What a beautiful morning, we couldn't ask for a better day for cross country, great temperatures and an awesome turnout for crowd. It was a lot of fun," said director of track & field/cross country Jeremy Sudbury. "It was cool for our athletes to get the experience at home and have so many people come out and support them; their teammates, fans, and people from the department. So, I just want to say thanks for that."
Following Winders, Kelvin Bungei ran for third place in 18:11.2, a pleasing result for Sudbury amid a big training phase. Quinton Orr rounded out the top-five finishers for the Cyclones in fourth place with a time of 18:20.3. Several athletes also made the transition from track to cross country, something else Sudbury found pleasantly surprising.
"Levi (Taylor) is more of an 800m runner, but he had a great race, same with Ernie (Mattson). Those guys are typically known more for the mile and 800m indoors, but to see them out here running cross country and mixing it up was pretty cool."
