AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) topped Arizona (1-3, 0-0 Pac 12) in four sets (27-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-12) to remain undefeated in the first meeting in program history between the sides.
The Cyclones took the first two sets before Arizona extended the match, narrowly winning the set 26-24. Iowa State took control of the fourth while Maya Duckworth made her 2023 debut, hitting four kills (.667 hitting) and putting up three solo blocks in the set alone. ISU hit .241 while holding Arizona to .096 through the night.
Annie Hatch put up another double-figure kill performance with 12 at an efficiency of .333 to break 800 on her career to now total 802. Setter Morgan Brandt went out to another stellar performance, notching her third-straight 30-plus assist match and second double-double of the season. Brandt totaled 34 assists, 11 digs, five kills on 11 attempts (.364 hitting) and two aces.
SET ONE
Iowa State took four straight from Arizona as the tone was set with a kill from Nayeli Gonzalez who slammed down the ball right as it crossed over the net to go up 5-3. The two sides dualed as six ties were seen before ISU stretched a lead of three at 15-12 after a successful Iowa State challenge. Arizona then came back to tie things up at 20-20. A Morgan Brandt kill brought ISU to set point, but Arizona answered, getting themselves to set point at 25-24. The set extended as the Cyclones battled back to take the set 27-25 on a Brandt ace. ISU hit .355 through the opening frame.
SET TWO
Iowa State held the advantage and went up 13-9 following another setter kill by Brandt and a block by Hatch and Pam McCune. Arizona then took the lead back at 17-16 before Jordan Hopp halted Arizona's 6-0 run with her fifth kill of the match. Two solo Gonzalez blocks and a Brandt kill followed as ISU went on a run of five. The Cyclones didn't look back as they took the set 25-22.
SET THREE
Iowa State kept it rolling while Hatch collected her ninth kill to put ISU in front 19-13. Arizona would come back to take its first lead of 22-21. McCune brought the set to a tie at 24 with an ace, but Arizona pulled ahead 26-24 to force a fourth.
SET FOUR
The Cyclones pulled ahead, dominating the set to go up by 10 at 16-6 on Duckworth's second solo block. Duckworth was unstoppable, putting up her third solo to make it 17-7 before slamming down two kills to reach 20 points while Arizona held nine. Duckworth hit the match-ending kill to notch the victory.

Iowa State continues the GCU Tournament tomorrow with two matches. The Cyclones first meet Long Island at noon followed by GCU at 9 p.m. CT.
