OMAHA, Nebraska – Iowa State (7-1, 0-0 Big 12) fell to No. 16 Creighton (7-2, 0-0 Big East) 3-1 (21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 24-26) Sunday afternoon for the first loss of the season.
The Cyclone battled, winning the fourth and nearly forcing a fifth by extending the set. Iowa State was held under an efficiency of .200 for the first time in 2023, getting outhit .255-.159.
Setter Morgan Brandt led the blockers with five block assists while notching 40 assists, eight digs and four kills.
Maya Duckworth sent over 12 kills to lead the Cyclones and Nayeli Gonzalez joined her in double figures with 10. Duckworth extended her double-figure kill hitting streak to four with the total.
SET ONE
Iowa State and Creighton traded points early while Pam McCune and Duckworth nailed down two early kills to cut Creighton's advantage to one at 9-8. As Creighton led 13-10, Annie Hatch slammed down two-straight kills to total her fourth of the match. The set kept close as Iowa State had a successful challenge, reversing the score from 20-17 to 19-18 with the Bluejays ahead. Setter Brandt then fired up the Cyclones as she slammed down a kill of her own to make it 21-20. Creighton would go on to take the set 25-21.
SET TWO
Creighton ran out to a lead of 10-5 and continued to hold the advantage of 15-7 as the Bluejays hit at an efficiency of .500, causing an ISU timeout. Out of the timeout, the Cyclones hit a 4-1 run to put the score at 16-11. Iowa State would fight off two set points, but Creighton went ahead 25-19 for the 2-0 match lead.
SET THREE
Nayeli Gonzalez put ISU on the board first while Creighton would follow go ahead, but the Cyclones would retake the lead at 8-7. An ace from Lilly Wachholz would stretch the lead to three (10-7) and cause Creighton to call a timeout. Duckworth hit three more kills after that as ISU continued to lead 14-11. The Bluejays would then knot the score three times, but ISU pushed on to lead by five (22-17). The Cyclones found set point at 24-20, and Duckworth would extend the match on her 10th kill with ISU up 25-22.
SET FOUR
The battle continued, with the Cyclones taking the lead at 6-5 on another Duckworth kill followed by a block put up by Alexis Engelbrecht and Brandt to extend the lead. Iowa State continued to hold the momentum as Creighton used a timeout after a Hatch ace (14-10). ISU went on to lead 22-17, with Creighton fighting back to trim their deficit to two. The score would be brought to a tie at 24s, but Creighton would take the next two points to end the match.
NEXT UP
Iowa State returns home next week for the Cyclone Invite Sept. 14-16. ISU will open the tournament with UCSB Thursday followed by Ohio on Friday. On Saturday, the Cyclones close the non-conference slate meeting Drake. Tickets are available here.
