With preseason meets wrapped up, the Iowa State men's and women's cross country teams travel to Charlottesville this weekend to compete at the Virginia Invitational. The pre-national meet will feature six top-10 teams on the men's side and four top-10 squads in the women's 5K.

The Field at the Virginia Invitational
Competition will be solid in both the men's and women's fields. NAU looks to bring two strong teams (No. 1 – men, No. 2 – women) to Charlottesville while six other teams, including Iowa State, rank in the top-30 nationally for both men and women. In the men's 8K, top-10 teams include NAU, BYU (No. 3), Stanford (No. 4), North Carolina (No. 6), Colorado (No. 7) and Virginia (No. 10). For the women, NAU leads with the highest national ranking entering Saturday while Colorado (No. 5), Stanford (No. 9) and North Carolina (No. 10) also rank in the top-10. Cyclones Sit in Top-30 in USTFCCCA Week 1 Poll
Both the Iowa State men and women remained in the top-30 as the USTFCCCA released its Week 1 national poll. The Midwest region No. 2 Cyclone women improved one spot nationally to No. 26 while the Midwest No. 3 men sit at No. 27 nationally following the conclusion of preseason meets.
Iowa State Women Claim Two Teams Wins to Start 2023
The Cyclone women are off to a hot start after wrapping up two preseason meets with two team wins. Iowa State claimed 13 of the top-14 individual finishes at the Cyclone Preview before outracing runner-up Nebraska, 52-62, at the Greeno-Dirksen Invitational.
Keeney Claims Big 12 Weekly Honors
Sophomore Ashlyn Keeney picked up her first career Big 12 Runner of the Week award following a fourth-place finish at the Greeno-Dirksen Invitational. The North Liberty, Iowa native finished the women's 5K in 17:22.2 to lead the Cyclones to their second team win in as many meets.
Cyclone Men Complete Sweep at Cyclone Preview
The Iowa State men also had a strong showing at their home meet as Silas Winders ran to an individual title in the 6K race with a time of 17:57.3. Kelvin Bungei ran for third place in 18:11.2 while Quinton Orr was also among the top-five in 18:20.3.
Hill Earns First Big 12 Weekly Award
Following a solid performance at the season opener, Madelynn Hill was selected as the Big 12 Women's Runner of the Week. It marks the first time in her career that she's earned the honor. Hill was the top scoring individual finisher and runner-up at the Cyclone preview, finishing 19 seconds ahead of teammate Dana Feyen in third place.
Iowa State Makes Preseason Impression
Late in August, the USTFCCCA released its preseason regional and national cross country rankings for both NCAA DI men and women. The Cyclone women checked in at No. 2 in the Midwest regional poll and No. 27 nationally while the men were third in the regional poll and cracked the top-25 in the national standings.
