AMES, Iowa – Iowa State outside hitter Nayeli Gonzalez will miss the rest of the season after suffering an injury to her left knee in the first set of last Wednesday's match at Houston.
Gonzalez will undergo surgery next week and focus on her recovery.
"We are heartbroken for Nayeli and the injury she experienced during the Houston match," Head Coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "Her recovery will take some time, but we are optimistic about her prognosis and potential to return to playing volleyball at a high level. She is a strong person and is committed to getting back on the court next year."
Gonzalez, who was working her way back after a shoulder injury, totaled 127 kills and seven double figure kill outings in 11 matches played. Her 2024 highlights included a season-opening double-double of 19 kills and 14 digs, and two matches with 16 or more kills at a hitting percentage of .400 or greater. The sophomore hit 18 kills at a career-high .483 against Iowa and put up a career-high six block assists at Kansas State.
"I recently sustained an injury that has temporarily taken me out of the game I love," Gonzalez said. "I wasn't expecting my season to end like this, but I am very grateful for all the people I have around me that are helping me through all of this. I want to thank everyone especially my family, staff and teammates for the overwhelming support I've received during this challenging time. Although I am sidelined right now, I am committed to working hard during this healing process. I look forward to returning stronger and more determined than ever."
Last season as a freshman, Gonzalez became the first Iowa State rookie to earn All-America honors or First Team All-Big 12. The Honorable Mention All-American also earned Big 12 Rookie of the Year, AVCA Regional Freshman of the Year and AVCA All-Region First Team.
