WACO, Texas – After another day filled with weather delays, the Cyclones proved they were up to the challenge taking two Big 12 titles late into the night Friday.
Five hours from the originally scheduled time, Cam Jones stepped into the shot put ring ready to make a statement. Jones sat in fourth after the first three rounds before jumping to the top spot on the fourth go with 64-6 3/4 (19.68m). That mark would remain in the lead as Jones secured his third Big 12 title. With Jones also winning the 2024 indoor shot put, the thrower is the ninth in the Big 12 and second in ISU history to take both titles in the same year.
Janette Schraft was crowned next, achieving redemption after three bronze-medal finishes in the 3,000m steeplechase. Schraft left no doubt winning the race by 10 seconds with a sub-10 minute time of 9:58.75. The time takes down the facility record, while nearly hitting the meet record of 9:56.53 set by Colorado's Emma Coburn in 2010. Schraft took the lead about four laps in and never looked back. The senior is the first woman in program history to win the event.

Sydney Willits put on a show in the long jump to leave with the silver medal. Willits stood in seventh until her fifth leap where she moved to third. Willits had more left as she hit 21-3 1/4 (6.48m) on her sixth and final jump to move up another spot to second. The mark is an indoor best for the junior, now the No. 2-mark in Iowa State history. It also currently ranks at No. 22 in the nation.
For the men steeplechasers, Gable Sieperda secured the bronze with 8:33.83 and Quinton Orr took sixth with 8:48.88. The duo added nine team points to the team total.
Kiersten Fisher began day two of the heptathlon with a personal best in the long jump, recording a distance of 19-4 1/4 (5.90m). Both multi-event athletes then hit all-time bests in the javelin, with Kailynn Gubbels throwing 123-2 (37.55m) for fifth in the event to move up three spots to ninth overall with 4,444.
In 86-degree heat, the heptathlon came to a close with Gubbels cutting three seconds off her 800m PR with 2:20.31. That time brought the sophomore's total to 5,263, a PR to move up a spot to No. 4 in ISU history. Gubbels finished just out of scoring position in ninth while Fisher finalized 11th just off her PR with 5,037. Gubbels notched personal records in the 200m, javelin and 800m, and a season best in the high jump, while Fisher recorded bests in the shot put and javelin throughout the seven events.
The Big 12 Championships come to a close tomorrow, with events for ISU beginning at noon. Due to the weather delays, preliminary rounds scheduled for Friday will move to timed finals Saturday.
