AMES, Iowa – Nayeli Gonzalez earned unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team while Iowa State was picked to finish sixth in the competitive conference, announced by the league Wednesday.
As one of just four unanimous selections among the Big 12, Gonzalez is the youngest among the quartet. Gonzalez prepares for her sophomore campaign following a historic freshman year that saw her earn AVCA and VolleyballMag.com Honorable Mention All-America, AVCA First Team All-Region, All-Big 12 First Team and AVCA Midwest Region and Big 12 Rookie of the Year. Gonzalez became the first freshman in ISU history to earn All-America honors or First Team All-Big 12.
Gonzalez is the 20th Preseason All-Big 12 Team member in Iowa State history. Last season the Texas native totaled a team-leading 348 kills and 33 aces while also notching 224 digs and 47 blocks. The outside hitter had four 20-plus kill matches, including the first 30-kill performance by a Cyclone since 2008.
In the Preseason Big 12 Poll voted on by the league's coaches, Iowa State checked in at No. 6 with 142 points, just two points behind No. 5 Baylor and four behind No. 4 TCU.
