VERMILLION, S.D. – Iowa State (4-4, 0-0 Big 12) dropped the four-set match to host South Dakota (5-2, 0-0 Summit) by set scores of 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 20-25 Saturday night.
Iowa State fought back to take the third hitting at a .400 clip after falling behind 2-0 in the match, but could not go on to force a fifth. Iowa State was without Nayeli Gonzalez as the Cyclones suffered their second straight loss. Iowa State hit at nearly .300, outhitting the Coyotes .287-.258, but gave up 15 service errors through the sets.
Morgan Brandt hit a career milestone passing 2,000 career assists to now hold 2,025. Brandt is the 12th in Iowa State history to hit 2,000. The junior totaled 56 assists, totaling a season high and leading the match.
Lilly Wachholz (18) and Pam McCune (13) both hit career highs in kills, with Wachholz hitting at a .471 clip and McCune at .480. Wachholz put up a 20.5-point performance to lead the match. Maya Duckworth brought in a season-high 16 kills at .351 hitting. Defensively, Brooke Stonestreet led all players with 19 digs, while Rachel Van Gorp totaled 16, her eighth straight match in double figures.
SET ONE
Faith DeRonde went back-to-back with kills to make it 5-5 early on, and laid down another to give ISU a slight 7-6 edge. DeRonde kept going, getting her fourth kill on five swings to make it a 10-9 ISU advantage. Late in the set Lilly Wachholz provided a trio of crucial kills to aid Iowa State in knotting the score at 20s. DeRonde sent over a pair of kills to put ISU up 22-20, but South Dakota came back for a 23-22 lead. The Coyotes would take the set 25-23 after two ISU attack errors.
SET TWO
A Wachholz kill got ISU on the board as USD led 4-1, and the redshirt sophomore delivered another making it 5-2. A trio of Pam McCune kills followed to bring the Cyclones within two (7-5), but South Dakota found a four-point lead of 11-7 to force an ISU timeout. South Dakota hit at a hitting percentage over .600 in the set to bring the home team in front by 20-15 as Iowa State called a timeout. ISU fought off three set points, but USD took the 2-0 match lead by a second set score of 25-22.
SET THREE
ISU found a 11-9 lead on Duckworth's 10th kill without an error while holding a hitting percentage of .500. The Cyclones would remain up 15-11 after a successful ISU challenge, bringing the Cyclones' scoring run to three straight. McCune notched her 11th kill at .588 hitting as the Cyclones went on their way to lead 21-15 as USD called a timeout. Iowa State continued to battle, winning the third 25-19 while outhitting the Coyotes .400-.171.
SET FOUR
South Dakota got out to a 5-1 start, but ISU came back to tie it at 5s after a successful Cyclone challenge. The run extended to five straight after a DeRonde kill, but USD flipped the lead again. After a Coyote run of three, Iowa State called a timeout at 14-10. South Dakota would find 20 points as Iowa State held 15, and sealed the victory at 25-20.
