AMES, Iowa – Playing the opening match inside of its brand-new indoor tennis facility, Iowa State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) opened its spring season with a 5-2 victory over North Texas (2-1, 0-0 AAC) Friday morning.
The Cyclones jumped the Mean Grean from the start, taking the doubles point thanks to wins at the No. 1 and 3 spots. ISU's Valeska San Martin and Suzanie Pretorius dispatched UNT's Marina Adati and Lou Chalard in quick fashion, 6-0, in the No. 3 spot. Cristina Ramos Sierra and Julia Camblor clinched the doubles point for Iowa State at the No. 1 spot with a 6-4 victory over Gianna Pielet and Stanislava Shulzhenko.
North Texas leveled the team score with a singles victory at the No. 3 spot before Camblor put the Cyclones back in front with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gianna Pielet in the No. 1 singles spot.
The Mean Green once again evened the team score with a win at the No. 3 slot but it was all Cyclones from that point on.
Pretorius, San Martin and Vilar all tallied singles victories at the No. 4, 6 and 2 spots, respectively, with San Martin's 6-3, 7-5 victory delivering the clinching point.
Iowa State is back in action this afternoon at 3 p.m. against Omaha.
