IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State posted several standout performances on day three of the Hawkeye Invitational, highlighted by personal bests, high-scoring swims and a strong relay finish as the Cyclones continued to build momentum heading into the final day of competition.
"We saw great racing and diving across the board tonight," head coach Matt Leach said. "We need to come ready to compete tomorrow. As we go through the season, we want to be able to produce at a high level every single day. Last year, we scored 355 points, and we're already 102 points above that and we still have another full day. We're doing a great job, but obviously there's still more to do."
How It Happened
The evening started with Kendall Mallers, who delivered a solid performance for the Cyclones in the 100 butterfly. Mallers dropped a personal best 55.34 to earn a 21st place finish and secure valuable points for Iowa State.
In the 400 IM, sophomore Anja Peck continued her strong meet with a finals swim of 4:26.36, finishing in 15th place and scoring 12 points for the Cyclones. Peck's closing freestyle leg helped give her leverage in the final 100 meters.
Freshman Piper Hagen added another highlight swim in the 200 freestyle, posting a personal best 1:50.25 in finals to put her at number four on the Iowa State top five freshman list.
The 100 breaststroke had one of the deepest Cyclone showings of the night, with four swimmers in finals. Grace Swoboda led the charge with a 1:00.99, continuing her consistency in the breaststroke events. Emma Kuhn recorded a personal best 1:02.51, dropping time from prelims for another strong finish. Matilde Geromin followed closely at 1:03.23, and Anja Peck added a second finals swim of the session with a 1:01.81, closing out a strong showing for the sophomore.
On the boards, Kate Mitchell once again led the Cyclone divers with an appearance in the A-Final of the 3-meter event where she placed fourth, scoring a 310.95 and 22 team points for the Cyclones. Ally Blumenfeld, Iona Moffat, and Abby Tollefson also competed in the diving B-final, where they each scored valuable team points.
The Cyclones closed the night with a strong showing in the 400 medley relay, as the ISU A-squad of Hagen, Mallers, Peck, and Swoboda clocked a 3:45.72 to cap off the evening finals session.
