CYCLONES vs. HAWKEYES
Sunday marks the 89th all-time meeting between the Cyclones and Hawkeyes, the fourth-most contested series in ISU wrestling history. Iowa State is looking for its first win over the Hawkeyes since 2004 and first in Hilton Coliseum since 2003.
Three members of Iowa State's coaching staff - Kevin Dresser, Brent Metcalf and Derek St. John - wrestled at the University of Iowa. Dresser was a two-time Big Ten champ, two-time All-American and a 1986 NCAA champion. Metcalf, who was inducted into the Iowa Hall of Fame in 2023, was a three-time All-American, two-time NCAA champ and the 2008 Hodge Trophy winner. St. John was a four-time All-American and 2013 NCAA Champion for the Hawkeyes.

CYCLONES ON ESPN
Sunday's Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk dual will air nationally on ESPN. It will be the third college wrestling dual televised on ESPN's flagship station with all three taking place in Ames.

149-POUND DEPTH
The competition between two-time Big 12 champion Paniro Johnson and All-American Jacob Frost for Iowa State's 149-pound starting spot has been one of the more intriguing lineup battles in the country this season.
Dresser said in Tuesday's media availability that Jacob Frost holds the edge, 2-1, in the best two-of-three wrestle-off with Johnson, but that outcome doesn't necessarily dictate who will get the nod against the Hawkeyes.
If it's Frost who gets the nod in Sunday's Cy-Hawk dual, he could see Iowa's Ryder Block. Frost and Block have some history... The pair met in the 2022 Iowa Class 3A state finals with an early takedown by Block being the only score in a narrow 2-0 decision.
KEY STORYLINES
- Iowa State is back on the mat against the Hawkeyes following an off weekend. Last time out, the Cyclones downed reigning NCAA Division II national champions Nebraska-Kearney, 37-3. ISU won nine of 10 bouts, including seven by bonus-point margin.
- This rendition of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk dual could feature seven top-10 matchups and nine top-15 matchups, based on the probable lineups released by both teams this week.
- Two of the last three Cy-Hawk duals have been decided by three points or less.
- Head coach Kevin Dresser preaches a high-paced, entertaining style of wrestling and encourages his athletes to give fans their money's worth. So far this season, 65.2% of ISU's wins have come with bonus points.
- Following a 2024-25 season which saw several key Cyclones go down with season-ending injuries, Dresser and his staff have reloaded their squad. For the first time since 1982-83, ISU entered a season with seven past All-Americans on its roster.
- Dresser and Co. utilized the transfer portal to add several high-impact pieces to the roster, including three former All-Americans - Rocky Elam (Missouri), Stevo Poulin (UNCO) and Vinny Zerban (UNCO). Isaac Dean (Rider), a 2025 NCAA Qualifier who reached the Round of 16 last season, also joined the Cyclones.
- Evan Frost is poised to make his season debut at 133 pounds. He has slowly descended to the weight while wrestling to a 3-0 record at 141 pounds.
- Stevo Poulin is 1-0 all-time vs. Dean Peterson. Poulin, then at Northern Colorado, eliminated Peterson, then at Rutgers, from the NCAA Championships last season via 6-4 decision.
- Yonger Bastida is 1-0 in his career vs. Ben Kueter, a 7-2 decision in last year's Cy-Hawk dual.
