AMES, Iowa – No. 7 Iowa State (21-2, 8-2 Big 12) remained undefeated at home in a 72-69 victory over Baylor (13-10, 3-8 Big 12) Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
Ahead 70-55 with under three minutes left, the Cyclones were able to withstand a late 14-2 Baylor rally to earn the sweep over the Bears this year.
Led by Milan Momcilovic's 21 points, his 11th 20-point outing of the season, the Cyclones shot 53.8 percent in the second half.
Joshua Jefferson scored 10 of his 15 points after intermission and Tamin Lipsey poured in 14 points and paced the Cyclones with nine boards.
BU's Cameron Carr led all players with 24 points behind five 3-pointers.
Iowa State was able to outrebound the taller Bears, 37-25.
How it Happened
A Killyan Toure drive to the hoop gave the Cyclones a 19-13 lead with 11:24 left in the first half. Iowa State had never trailed up to this point.
But that quickly changed when Carr made three deep, contested treys, and Tounde Yessoufou added another to push the Bears out in front 27-24 with 7:01 left in the first half.
Both teams then went cold, as the Cyclones survived a 0-for-7, four-minute scoreless drought ended by a Jefferson lay-in to knot the score at 29-all with 3:22 remaining.
However, a couple of threes by Nate Heise and Jamarion Batemon down the stretch allowed the Cyclones to go into the break with a 37-33 lead.
After Jefferson scored the first basket of the second half, BU made five-straight shots to retake the lead at 44-43 behind an 11-4 run.
The Cyclones bounced right back with a Blake Buchanan slam and a Jefferson 3-pointer to give ISU a slim 52-49 lead at the 11:28 mark of the second half. Moments later, Toure picked Obi Agbim for a lay-up followed by a Momcilovic corner trey to give the Cyclones a 57-49 lead.
Lipsey then provided the Cyclones with a 12-point cushion (63-51) with back-to-back nifty drives and buckets with 7:01 remaining.
ISU's lead ballooned to 15 points (70-55) with under three minutes left. But a frantic spurt by the Bears down the stretch cut the lead to 72-69 points with 1.2 seconds left after Yessoufou hit his second trey in a 14-2 run to close out the game.
Key Performer
Senior Tamin Lipsey scored 14 points and was key in many of ISU's second chances, tallying a team-high nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end. His back-to-back baskets in the final six minutes helped the Cyclones with the cushion they needed. Lipsey also had two steals to move him past Kansas' Mario Chalmers at No. 3 on the Big 12's all-time career steal list (284).
