Ben Madsen is in his fourth season as assistant soccer coach at Iowa State after a four-year stint on the University of South Alabama staff. Madsen assists in all the technical and tactical aspects of the Iowa State soccer program, while working with the Cyclone goalkeepers. Madsen also serves as the recruiting coordinator.
This past season Madsen helped guide freshman goalkeeper Maddie Jobe to four shutouts and Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. Jobe was forced into action after senior Ashley Costanzo was hurt in the season’s third match.
Madsen was also a key factor in helping Iowa State land its 2010 freshman class that went on to have the team’s top five point producers, score all of the Cyclones’ goals in Big 12 Conference play and had 10 members crack the starting lineup.
In 2009, Madsen helped guide Ann Gleason to the Iowa State program career goalkeeping wins (26), career shutouts (16) and career saves (403) records.
The 2009 Cyclone season also saw Iowa State get off to the best start in program history, as Iowa State went unbeaten in its first seven matches. The Cyclones downed NCAA-Championship-bound Oklahoma State, defeated Texas for the second time in program history and earned a victory over nationally-ranked DePaul in the 2009 campaign. During his time at Iowa State, Madsen has seen the Cyclones improve every year in wins overall and in Big 12 Conference play.
While at South Alabama, Madsen helped lead the Jaguars to the Sunbelt Conference tournament in each of his four seasons and coached the first-team all-league goalkeeper in 2004.
Prior to South Alabama, Madsen was an assistant at Alabama-Huntsville for one season. He has also been an assistant at Lincoln College (Ill.).
Madsen worked with the Alabama Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2004-2008 and was the goalkeeper director at Mobile Soccer Club. He holds an NSCAA Advanced diploma and an NSCAA National Goalkeeping diploma. Madsen also currently coaches for the Ames Soccer Club.
Madsen was a three-year starter as goalkeeper at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., where he holds the career saves record. In 2001, Madsen was named team Most Valuable Player and received all-Gulf South Conference honors.
Madsen and his wife Ann were wed in May 2010.
