AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team went 3-0 last weekend at the Western Illinois NIC tournament in Macomb, Ill. Freshman Lindsay Herrin was 7-of-10 at the plate with one homerun for the weekend. The Cyclones defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay 6-0, Valparaiso 6-1 and Bradley 2-1 in pool play. ISU would have advanced out of pool play to face the winners of the other pools in tournament play. Unfortunately for the Cyclones the tournament was called due to rain.
Herrin was 2-of-3 with one home run while sophomore Kelly Wardein was 2-of-3 at the plate with one double in ISU's 6-0 shutout over Wisconsin-Green Bay. Junior hurler Jen Bice threw a one hitter to pick up the victory.
Iowa State tallied 11 hits in a 6-1 victory over Valparaiso. Herrin went 3-of-3 while sophomore Julia Lindsay was 3-of-5 at the plate. Adi Blackmon and freshman Diana Reuter each contributed two hits while senior Kristin Shipley was 1-of-1 at the plate. Junior pitcher Erica Martinez picked up the victory.
The Cyclones edged Bradley, 2-1 in the last game of pool play. Bradley took a 1-0 lead after the third but ISU answered back in the bottom of the fifth scoring one run to tie the game. With two outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh Herrin hit a game-winning RBI single to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Julia Lindsay was 3-of-4 at the plate with one double and one triple. Bice picked up the win.
