CLEVELAND - Iowa State was missing two starters in its regular-season opener at Cleveland State today, but rolled to a 73-51 win over the Vikings behind balanced scoring. Senior guard Erica Junod must sit out three games after a decision on eligibility by the NCAA, while freshman point guard Lyndsey Medders sprained her left ankle in practice Friday night.
Five Cyclones scored in double figures and one had nine points in a balanced scoring column that included 11 3-pointers. Anne O'Neil led ISU with 16 points and dished a career-best 12 assists. Mary Fox hit a career-high five 3-pointers for 15 points in her hometown, while Megan Ronhovde and Brittany Wilkins added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Cyclones. Lisa Kriener had 10 points and Tracy Paustian added nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds for ISU.
"This team is going to have to be balanced all year long," Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. "For the first time since I've been here, we don't have a star, quality player."
With O'Neil running the point, the Cyclones owned a 38-25 halftime lead after getting 10 points off the bench from Wilkins and nine points from Paustian. Kriener scored Iowa State's first six points, but picked up two quick fouls to put her on the sidelines for the remainder of the half. ISU sank 45.7 percent from the floor in the first half.
Cleveland State scored the first four points of the second half, but Iowa State went on a 14-0 run fueled by an O'Neil layup and four consecutive 3-pointers. Seven of Iowa State's 10 second-half baskets were 3-pointers, three each for O'Neil and Ronhovde.
The Cyclones outrebounded CSU 44-37 and hit 41.9 percent from the floor in the game. Cleveland State sank 33.3 percent of its shots, including a chilly 21.4 percent from behind the arc.
