ISU Softball Defeats Middle Tennessee State in 2003 Sunshine State Tournament

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Iowa State softball team defeated Middle Tennessee State, 3-1, in the first game of the 2003 Sunshine State Tournament Friday afternoon in Tallahassee. The win improved the Cyclones overall record to 3-4. Four Cyclones notched hits in the win, led off by a two-of-three outing by junior Julia Lindsey.

Both teams started off slowly as they took a scoreless tie into the third inning until ISU scored at run late. The Cyclones added two more runs in the sixth inning to Middle Tennessee State's 1 to win the game, 3-1.

Senior Erica Martinez was the game's winning pitcher, improving her record to 3-1. She had nine strikeouts and only one walk. She also recorded one hit and one RBI. Senior Katie Ruby also had one hit and one RBI .

Iowa State will take on No. 9 Florida State later on Friday night. The Sunshine State Tournament will continue on Saturday with ISU again taking on Florida State.
