OKLAHOMA CITY - Four Cyclones earned all-Big 12 honors and seven earned academic all-Big 12 honors, the Big 12 Conference announced today, the first day of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Tournament at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Seniors Erica Martinez and Katie Ruby each earned first team all-Big 12 honors. Martinez is third on the team with a .283 batting average and leads the team in doubles (9) and walks (23). She has 30 hits and 14 runs and has 22 RBI. She is ISU's home run leader with 27 career home runs. It is the second year in a row she has been named to the first team. Ruby is a first-time member of the first team. She is third on the team with a .277 batting average and leads the team in home runs (8) and RBI (23). She is also first on the team with 262 putouts.
Junior Julia Lindsey and freshman Cary Akins each earned second team all-Big 12 honors. Lindsey leads the team with a .325 batting average and also leads the team in hits (50), runs (20) and at bats (154). Akins, the only ISU freshman to start every game this year, is fifth on the team in batting average with .225. She also has 25 hits and four runs this year, along with 98 assists. This is the second year in a row Iowa State has placed a freshman on the all conference team. Lindsey Herrin was a first-team member last season.
Iowa State placed seven Cyclones on the academic all-Big 12 team. Seniors Adi Blackmon, Jen Bice, Molly McNertney and Cassandra Kastler and sophomores Heather McLatchie and Kim Rodgers were named to the first team academic all-Big 12 team, while juniors Julia Lindsey and Kelly Wardein were named to the second team.
To qualify for the academic first team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.20 GPA or better, while the second team consists of those who have a 3.00 to a 3.19 GPA.
