COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly earned his 350th career victory as the Cyclones defeated Texas A&M 66-58. The Cyclones (10-8, 3-4 Big 12) captured their first conference road win of the season despite a 40-29 rebounding deficit. ISU shot a conference season-high 54.5 percent from the field while holding the Aggies (7-12, 0-8) to 35.7 percent.
Anne O'Neil hit 7-of-8 field goals and scored 15 of Iowa State's 25 first-half points while Texas A&M used a combined 21 points from Toccara Williams and Charlette Castile and 13 offensive as a team to stay in the game despite shooting 27.8 percent. Castile finished the half with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Texas A&M's 4-0 lead was the largest by either team in the first half. Five straight points by O'Neil and a layup by Brittany Wilkins quickly gave ISU a 7-4 lead, which was the largest lead for ISU in a first half that saw four ties. Iowa State outscored Texas A&M 7-3 over the final five minutes to lead 25-23 at the break.
The Aggies' Erica Roy tied the game on the first possession of the second half, but Wilkins answered with a basket for ISU, and the Cyclones held the lead the rest of the way. Wilkins scored her team's first six points of the half, and Iowa State made its first six shots of the half en route to a 15-6 run. A 3-pointer by Tracy Paustian with 15 minutes left capped the flurry to give ISU a 40-31 lead.
Iowa State held its largest lead at 54-42 and led by 10 with six minutes to play before Texas A&M began a comeback. The Aggies went on a 9-1 run over the next four minutes and had the ball trailing by two with under two minutes to play. Lyndsey Medders responded for ISU, scoring five points in a 30-second span to put ISU back in control at 63-56.
Williams finished with a game-high 26 points to go along with eight rebounds and nine assists while Scales finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Texas A&M grabbed 25 offensive rebounds while collecting 17 on the defensive end.
O'Neil led Iowa State with 20 points and collected all five second-half points at the free throw line. Megan Ronhovde came off the bench to collect her first career double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds while hitting 3-of-5 3-pointers.
Iowa State used its 10th different starting lineup of the season and its third unique combination in the last three contests. ISU won its first road game against a southern division conference foe since 2001, ending a 10-game losing streak.
