AUSTIN, Texas - Texas' Kelly Wilson scored the game-winning goal at 2:31 of overtime to give the homestanding Longhorns a 1-0 victory over Iowa State at Myers Stadium in Austin on Friday night. ISU falls to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in Big 12 action, while the Longhorns improve to 10-5-1 and 5-3-1 in conference play.
The setback snapped the Cylcones' nine-match unbeaten streak in overtime contests. The last time Iowa State lost in overtime was Oct. 31, 2001, when it fell at Minnesota, 1-0. During that stretch, ISU was 4-0-5 in overtime matches.
The ISU offense was paced by junior Amy Flores with three shots on the evening, giving her 23 for the year, second-best on the team. Flores' attempt to give Iowa State a lead in the first half was thwarted by the Longhorn defense when her shot from six yards out got past the Texas goalkeeper, but was cleared by UT midfielder Carrie Schmit before it crossed the goal line.
The Cyclone defense played tough against Texas led by freshman goalkeeper Joanna Haig, who had one of her top performances of the season, stopping a career-best 14 shots on goal in the contest.
"Jo played outstanding," said ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. "The team weathered the storm and played solid in certain areas. Unfortunately, we didn't capitalize on things. Now, we just need to put things together for Sunday's game."
Iowa State hosts ninth-ranked Texas A&M (12-5, 7-2 Big 12) on Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex at 1 p.m. The Aggies enter Sunday's contest following a 1-0 home loss to No. 6 Kansas.
