AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's basketball team plays host to William Penn on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. ISU head coach Bill Fennelly will showcase his 2004-05 Cyclone squad against his alma mater in the preseason exhibition game.
"We are very excited to get on the court for our first exhibition," Fennelly said. "Like most coaches, I do not think we are ready for a game, but we sure need to play someone so that we have another method of evaluating where we are at this time."
Fennelly, a 1979 William Penn graduate, started his coaching career as a student assistant for the Lady Statesmen. He worked under former WPU head coach Bob Spencer from 1976-81, accumulating a 156-27 record over five seasons. The Lady Statesmen made four national tournament appearances during Fennelly's tenure, winning the 1981 AIAW Division II national title.
"It will be nice to play my alma mater," Fennelly said. "William Penn is a special place to me. The two most important things in my life came as a result of my time there - meeting my wife Deb and the start of my coaching career."
Fennelly lost just one starter to graduation in Erica Junod and looks to a senior class of five for leadership in 2004-05. Last year's squad advanced to the Final Four round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and finished with an 18-15 record.
Senior guard Anne O'Neil, an honorable mention all-Big 12 Conference selection last year, is the Cyclones' top returning scorer (12.4 ppg). The academic All-American ranked ninth nationally and set the school single-season free-throw record, sinking 87.6 percent from the charity stripe. Senior forward Katie Robinette returns after joining the team midseason last year, and senior forward Lisa Kriener led the squad in rebounding (4.7 rpg) while starting 21 games in the post.
Sophomores Lyndsey Medders and Megan Ronhovde both earned starting roles last year and are seasoned veterans despite their youth. Medders set the ISU freshman record with 108 assists at point guard, while Ronhovde owns the freshman mark for 3-pointers made with a team-best 64 treys.
The Big 12 coaches voted ISU to finish sixth in their preseason poll and O'Neil was a preseason honorable mention all-conference pick by the league's coaches.
Iowa State will face Northwest Missouri State in its final exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. The Cyclones open regular-season play against Cleveland State Nov. 21.
