DALLAS - Iowa State tied for sixth in the media's preseason Big 12 Conference women's basketball poll released Thursday by the league office. ISU and Colorado were both voted sixth in the standings, while Texas earned the top spot.
The Cyclones finished last season with an 18-15 record, advancing to the WNIT Final Four. ISU, which was also picked sixth in the coaches poll, returns 89.2 percent of its scoring and 80.8 percent of its rebounding after losing just one starter to graduation.
Texas is the preseason favorite to win the women's title this season in a vote conducted among Big 12 media representatives. UT, No. 4 nationally in the first USA Today/ESPN poll of the year, is searching for its third Big 12 banner.
The media also selected preseason awards and an All-Big 12 team. Forward Kendra Wecker (Kansas State) was selected as the top player in the league. Forward Daria Mieloszynska (Texas) garnered newcomer accolades and Stephanie McGhee (Oklahoma) was the Preseason Freshman of the Year.
All of the honorees on the preseason All-Big 12 women's team were among 31 players nationally named to the preseason watch list for the State Farm Wade Trophy, presented annually to the nation's top player.
