IOWA CITY, Iowa - A 19-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome as the Iowa State women's basketball team fell 89-80 at Iowa. The Hawkeyes earned their fifth consecutive win to start the season while dealing the Cyclones (3-1) their first loss of the campaign. Iowa has won its last two home games in the in-state series, and the home team has won each of the last four contests.
Iowa State took an 11-10 lead after a three-pointer by Mary Fox with over 13 minutes remaining in the first half, but the Cyclones went nine minutes without a field goal after that as Iowa went on a 26-2 run. ISU committed seven of its 15 turnovers and got only a pair of free throws from Lisa Kriener during that span. Anne O'Neil scored eight consecutive points for ISU to end the drought, and Katie Robinette's three-point play made it 45-26 at the half.
Iowa opened up its largest lead of the game at 60-32 with 14 minutes remaining in the second half. The pace of the game picked up substantially from there as Iowa State outscored Iowa 48-29 the rest of the way. The Cyclones went on a 14-3 run over four minutes to pull within 12 points with three minutes left. Fox picked up 10 points during the flurry.
Iowa State's pressure led to two Iowa turnovers, and Lindsey Medders hit two three-pointers as ISU scored eight points in 20 seconds to make it 82-74 with just under a minute left. The Hawkeyes hit their last seven free throws in the final minute to seal the win. Iowa finished 24-for-29 from the charity stripe for the game.
Iowa's Jamie Cavey finished with a game-high 19 points and made all nine free throw attempts. Teammate Crystal Smith added 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
O'Neil led Iowa State with 17 points and Fox added 16 points. Robinette scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Megan Ronhovde finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Four of ISU's starters played at least 30 minutes.
