LAS VEGAS - Iowa State got career scoring performances from Anne O'Neil and Megan Ronhovde in an 88-76 first-round victory over Eastern Kentucky at UNLV's Duel in the Desert Saturday night. O'Neil had 20 of her game-high 28 points in the first half, while Ronhovde drained four 3-pointers in the second half en route to her career-best 23 points.
The Cyclones, now 7-1 after four consecutive wins, had two players score 20+ points for the first time since a double-overtime victory over Iowa last season. ISU faces host UNLV in Sunday night's championship game, a rematch of last season's WNIT Final Four matchup in Ames. The Lady Rebels won that game 65-59 to advance to the WNIT final.
Iowa State owned a 49-35 advantage at the half, getting double-figure scoring from three Cyclones. The Cyclones had six treys in the first stanza, including three for O'Neil, and shot 47.4 percent overall. Katie Robinette had nine rebounds at the break, while O'Neil added eight, giving the Cyclones a 26-14 edge on the boards.
Eastern Kentucky (3-5) made a second-half run, narrowing the gap to five (61-56) with 13:16 left. Ronhovde hit two consecutive treys to hold off EKU, but the Lady Colonels came within eight points (82-74) with just 41 seconds remaining. O'Neil connected on a pair of free throws and Mary Fox had layups on two-straight fast breaks to seal the Cyclones' victory.
ISU shot 47.6 percent for the game and drained 11 3-pointers, a Cox Pavilion record. The Cyclones outrebounded EKU 46-34, but committed 23 turnovers in the game. O'Neil posted her second double-double of the season, adding 10 rebounds to her 28 points, while Robinette also pulled down 10 boards in just 18 minutes of action. ISU's Lisa Kriener came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points while adding eight rebounds.
Candis Cook led EKU with 24 points and eight rebounds. The Lady Colonels shot 41.3 percent from the floor, including a 40 percent performance from 3-point territory.
