DALLAS -- Iowa State's Anne O'Neil was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played from Dec. 13-19 the conference office announced Monday.
O'Neil earned her second career Big 12 award after claiming Rookie of the Week honors in 2002-03. Players are nominated by each school's sports information office and voted on by a panel of media who cover Big 12 women's basketball.
O'Neil, a 5-11 senior guard, turned in back-to-back career scoring performances while leading Iowa State to the Duel in the Desert championship. She was named tournament MVP after averaging 28.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two games. She shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the field, including 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from the 3-point line, and 87.5 percent (21-of-24) from the charity stripe. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native poured in a career-best 28 points against Eastern Kentucky while adding 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. O'Neil drained 3-of-5 treys and sank 9-of-16 from the floor overall. She sank a career-high 14-of-16 free throws en route to a new career mark of 29 points in the championship game, helping ISU to an 86-78 overtime win over host UNLV. O'Neil also collected nine rebounds, five assists and four steals against the Lady Rebels.
