AMES, Iowa - Iowa State took care of the ball and used a balanced scoring attack to top Nebraska 77-66 Saturday afternoon in Ames. The Cyclones drained 48.1 percent from the floor and 45 percent from behind the arc to win their third consecutive game. It is the longest win streak for ISU this season.
"On defense we played pretty solid," head coach Bill Fennelly said. "Our team has an idea about what their strengths are. Our balance offensively was huge."
Iowa State committed just eight turnovers in the game, the fewest this season. The win improved ISU's record to 13-11 overall and 6-7 in Big 12 play, tying the Cyclones with Nebraska at seventh in the league standings. The Huskers fell to 16-8 overall.
Anne O'Neil led ISU with 16 points, while Brittany Wilkins knocked down a career-best two 3-pointers en route to 14 points. Katie Robinette and Lyndsey Medders added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Cyclones. Megan Ronhovde sank three treys for nine points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds. Margaret Richards led Nebraska with 18 points, while Keasha Cannon had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
"Our post players all played well," Fennelly said. "They seem to be in a position where they really want the ball. I'm really proud of our back-to-back efforts in the last two games by the post players."
Iowa State made four of its first five shots, including two 3-pointers, to jump out to a 12-5 lead. Nebraska's offense heated up and went on to sink four of its next five shots from behind the arc to tie the game at 28-28 with 3:36 left in the first half. The teams traded baskets until the Huskers' Jessica Gerhart hit a baseline jumper as time expired to pull within 38-35 at the break.
Nebraska sank two more 3-pointers within the first four minutes and took a 45-43 lead with 16:37 left to play. It would be the Huskers' only lead of the game as back-to-back 3-pointers by Ronhovde sparked a 17-4 ISU run to put the Cyclones up 65-49 with 11:19 remaining.
NU would get no closer than nine points the remainder of the game, while Iowa State sank eight of 10 free throws over the final 2:36 to seal the victory.
