AMES, Iowa - It was a fitting sendoff for ISU senior sharpshooter Erica Junod, as her Cyclones outshot, outran and outhustled Kansas en route to a 79-57 victory in Hilton Coliseum Thursday night.
Junod, playing in her final home regular season contest, led the Cyclones in scoring and assists, as she tallied 17 points and five assists on the evening. The fifth-year guard from Ankeny buried three of her five 3-point attempts, including two in the first half. Junod, who was a part of 38 wins in Hilton during her career, also pulled down four rebounds for Iowa State.
The Cyclones jumped on the Jayhawks early, knocking down six of their first eight field goal attempts to build a 15-5 lead at the 15:06 mark. ISU took a 16-point margin into the lockerroom at half and led by as many as 26 in the game. Iowa State continued a stretch of dominance in the series, as the Cyclones have beaten KU by more than 15 points in six of their last seven meetings.
Freshman point guard Lindsey Medders and junior forward Lisa Kriener were the other two Cyclones to score in double figures. Medders scored 13 points and tied Mary Fox for a team-high six rebounds. Kriener, who knocked down all six of her free-throw attempts, added 12 for ISU.
Kansas' Tamara Ransburg all scorers with 19 points while Crystal Kemp added 10. Ransburg also had a game-high seven rebounds.
Iowa State moves to 14-13 on the season and 7-9 in Big 12 play. The ninth-seeded Cyclones travel to Dallas on Tuesday, where they will face No. 8 Nebraska at noon in the opening round of the 2004 Big 12 Tournament. Iowa State split the regular season contests against the Huskers, dropping a 62-57 game in Lincoln and defeating NU 77-66 in Ames on Feb. 21.
