Omaha, Neb. - All-Americans Trent and Travis Paulson were crowned champions at 157 and 165 to lead the seventh-ranked Iowa State wrestlers at the Kaufman-Brand Open Saturday in Omaha. True freshman Nick Gallick (133) placed fourth while David Bertolino and Grant Turner finished fifth and sixth at 174 pounds.
"It was an intense tournament," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "Our guys fought hard all day against high caliber competition."
Trent, ranked fourth by Intermat/NWCA and third by Amateur Wrestling News, shut out Joe Johnston, the 2005 NCAA runner-up from Iowa in the finals, 4-0, for his second career Kaufman-Brand title. Paulson also beat Johnston last year in Iowa City, 10-8. In the semifinals he defeated NCAA Div. II top-ranked defending national champion Patrick Allibone of Nebraska-Omaha, 12-5. Johnston and Paulson will square off again Dec. 2 in Ames. Paulson is now 12-0 on the season with two pins and four technical falls.
Travis Paulson, ranked sixth in the nation, topped Northern Iowa's Nick Baima in the finals to earn his third career Kaufman-Brand championship. Paulson topped Baima for the second time this year as the two met in the finals at the Harold Nichols Open. Travis is also 12-0 on the season and also defeated two Iowa opponents, Joe Uker and Cole Pape.
Gallick, who also finished fourth at the Harold Nichols Open, scored a pin in his opening match at 133 pounds against Wisconsin's Josh Crass in 3:07 and proceeded to beat his next opponents to the tune of 9-4 and 3-1. After falling to Central Oklahoma's Earl Jones in the semifinals, Gallick defeated Northern Illinois' Andy Hiatt, the brother of NCAA qualifier Sam Hiatt, for the second time in the tournament, 8-3. Gallick then battled it out with Nebraska-Kearney's Brett Allgood, where he fell just short, 10-8.
ISU's Nate Gallick and Kurt Backes did not compete.
Iowa State face in-state rival Iowa Dec. 2 where the Cyclones are looking for their third straight win over the Hawkeyes. Last year ISU came away with a 19-16 win in Iowa City.
Notables: With Gallick preparing for the 40th annual NWCA All-Star Classic Monday in Stillwater, Okla., the 141 pound bracket had some wild action. 18th ranked Josh Wooton from Northern Illinois upset No. 4 All-American Daniel Frishkorn from Oklahoma State, 11-9 after Frishkorn blanked his first two opponents by a combined score of 28-0. Wooton fell in his next match to Iowa's NCAA qualifier Alex Tsirtsis, 3-2, where Virginia Tech's David Hoffman major decisioned the Hawkeye for the crown, 14-3. VT's Brent Metcalf, the nation's No. 1 recruit in 2005, placed third at 149 pounds, Joey Slaton was runner-up at 133 pounds in the 20 & Under bracket and Dan LeClere captured a 20 & Under title at 141 pounds, showing the Hokies' program is on the rise. Jayson Ness, an AWN All-American who signed with Minnesota and was ranked second in the nation to only Troy Nickerson in high school, finished second at 133 pounds in the 20 & Under division. Another highly touted Golden Gopher, Dustin Schlatter, brother of 157 pounder C.P., ripped through the 149 pound 20 & Under bracket with three falls, a technical fall, major decision and decision.
