AMES, Iowa - No. 7 Iowa State improved to 4-2 overall as they defeated No. 16 Illinois in its home-opener, 194.100-191.650 in Hilton Coliseum Friday. The Cyclones posted season-high team scores on beam and floor as well as sweeping the top five on vault.
On vault, Cyclone senior Janet Anson nabbed first-place honors with a season-high score of 9.875. Junior Katie Lasher notched a 9.80 to take second place. Senior Erin Dethloff (9.775) also set a season high on vault and placed third. Senior Laura-Kay Powell and sophomore Jade Kvach tied for fourth place honors, scoring 9.725, respectively. Sophomore
"The vault went well in our first meet at the Super Six," Kindler said. "It went well for us again tonight and that's what I expected."
ISU continued its dominance on bars as Dethloff (9.80) clinched first-place accolades. Cyclone freshman Ashley Kent and Illinois junior Cara Pomeroy shared second place with a 9.75. Anson (9.725) and Kent (9.675) rounded out the top five placing fourth and fifth. Iowa State's Kacey Oiness and Illinois' Kim Kruk tied for sixth place, posting 9.65.
Competing in front of our home crowd and doing well really made me feel good. Hopefully, we can continue improving and make it to nationals two years in a row." Dethloff said.
Powell continued Iowa State's winning ways on the beam tallying a season-high 9.85 claiming first place. Illinois freshman Julie Crall took second notching a 9.80. Dethloff (9.775) also set a season high on beam taking third.
Iowa State's Anson (9.90) once again posted a season high en route to a first place finish on the floor. Dethloff (9.825), Oiness (9.775), and Alden (9.750) also earned season highs, placing second, third and fourth respectively.
Dethloff completed ISU's victory by claiming first place all-around honors with a score of 39.175 also a season high. Anson took second place with a score of 38.700. Illinois' Kim Kruk (38.550) nabbed third and ISU's Jade Kvach (37.550) finished fourth.
"Erin Dethloff did awesome tonight on the all-around," said Kindler. "The seniors showed their leadership skills. There's improvement to be made and in the next two weeks we will work on conditioning."
Illinois' venture to Ames marks the return of Cyclone legend Kim Mazza, who is an assistant coach for the Fighting Illini . Mazza was a 1997 NCAA Individual qualifier in the all-around, the 1997 Big 12 floor champion and the 1997 Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year Mazza still holds the Iowa State school record with a 10.0 on the floor exercise, which she recorded at the Big 12 Championships in 1997.
Iowa State will travel to Iowa City to take on Iowa in its next meet on Jan. 28. A win for the Cyclone gymnasts will clinch the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series for ISU.
