AMES, Iowa--Iowa State sophomore Kiel Uhl will compete at the 2006 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Monday in Terre Haute, Ind., his second national collegiate cross country championship competition of his career.
Uhl, a Prole, Iowa, native, earned a spot for the championships when he took fourth at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Minneapolis, Minn. Uhl, who competed at the 2005 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, will have another chance to have a strong race against the best runners in the nation.
“I think his progression from day one to now has been a lot better than it was last year,” said men's head coach Corey Ihmels. “I think we're in a better spot physically and mentally getting ready for nationals on Monday. He had a little stumble in the season where he just didn't feel great, but I think that was just a little bit of a training phase we ran. I think he's coming around with time and obviously I think he's excited where he's at and to have another go at the national meet on Monday.”
The 10,000-meter course is on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, a circuit Uhl has already run on this season at the Pre-Nationals meet held on Oct. 14. Uhl will look to improve his time of 24:03.2, run on the same course.
The cross country championships will begin on Monday at 11 a.m. CST with the women's race. The men's race will follow the completion of the women's race with a start time of 12:15 p.m. CST.
