AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State senior point guard Lyndsey Medders was named to the Women's John R. Wooden Award Preseason All-America Team announced Wednesday.
The list is composed of 30 student-athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most coveted trophy. These top 30 candidates are comprised of returning players, although transfers, freshmen, medical redshirts and other players who excel throughout the season will be evaluated and considered for both the midseason Top 20 list and the national ballot.
Medders was named to the 2006-07 All-Big 12 Preseason Team and has earned honorable-mention preseason All-America honors from SportsPageMagazine.com and Street & Smith's College Basketball Yearbook to this point.
The Los Angeles, native, led the Cyclones in scoring as a junior with 16.5 points per game, and led the nation in assists per game, dishing 7.7 a contest last season. She joined the Cyclones' 1,000-point club in 2006, reaching 1,028 by season's end, and ranks second in career assists with 503 entering her final ISU campaign.
She was named to the 2006 All-Big 12 squad and was chosen as a third-team All-American by WBNS. Medders had eight games ranking in the top 15 in single-game assists last year for the Cyclones, including setting the school record with 16 against IPFW. She set the single-season mark with 215 dimes in her junior campaign, despite missing three games due to injury.
