AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State redshirt freshman Rachel Pierson was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Rookie of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Dec. 3-10, the Big 12 announced Monday afternoon. Missouri's EeTisha Riddle was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.
Pierson averaged 12.5 points and five rebounds a game while shooting 57.9 percent from the field in wins over Drake and Minnesota last week. She went 5-of-8 from the floor and had 11 points in 17 minutes against the Bulldogs, playing short minutes due to foul trouble. The St. Louis native led the Cyclones with 14 points, including 12 in the first half, and seven rebounds in 30 minutes against UM. She blocked two shots and had one assist vs. the Golden Gophers.
Pierson played just one regular-season game last season before taking a medical redshirt. She underwent back surgery last January, but has had an early impact for the Cyclones this season. She has started the last three games for ISU and has posted 9.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. She is shooting 59.3 percent from the field and has seven blocked shots.
Iowa State will face Saint Louis in the Mediacom Cyclone Capital Classic on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The game will tip at 11 a.m. and will be the first in a doubleheader with the ISU men, who will face Bradley at 2 p.m.
