COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State closed the game on a 13-0 run as the No. 4 Buckeyes overcame 24 points by Mike Taylor to defeat Iowa State, 75-56, Tuesday night at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Taylor's 24 points led all scorers and freshman Wesley Johnson chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for the Cyclones, who fall to 7-5 on the season.
Ohio State got 21 points from Daequan Cook and 18 from Greg Oden to improve to 10-1. The Buckeyes shot 53 percent from the field and 13-of-15 from the free throw line while holding the Cyclones to just 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.
Iowa State trailed by just two (53-51) following a 3-pointer by Cory Johnson, but the Buckeyes used a 13-5 run to push their lead to 66-56 with just 2:52 left in the game.
The first half went back-and-forth with both teams making extended runs. The Cyclones opened up an 8-4 run behind a pair of 3-pointers by Wesley Johnson and Cory Johnson and a jumper by Taylor. The Buckeyes responded, holding ISU scoreless for nearly six minutes, with a 15-0 run that ended on a Cory Johnson layup. The Cyclones extended their run to 8-0 on back-to-back treys by Taylor and Corey McIntosh to cut the lead to 19-16.
Ohio State responded with another run to push the lead to 25-16 before the Cyclones scored 12 of the next 16 points to make it 29-28 Ohio State at the half. Taylor, who hit a three at the buzzer, had 13 first half points to lead the Cyclones.
The Buckeyes opened the second half on an 11-4 run but ISU scrapped back to get within three, 42-39, as Wesley Johnson nailed a 3-pointer. The Cyclones again got within three on Dodie Dunson's first points of the game, a 3-pointer, which made it 51-48 Buckeyes with 7:32 remaining.
The Buckeyes got 25 points from their bench and forced 14 Cyclone turnovers resulting in 14 points to get the win.
The Cyclones will return to Hilton Coliseum Saturday to face Southeast Missouri State at 1 p.m.
