AMES, Iowa ? Senior All-America candidate Lyndsey Medders posted her second points-assist double-double of the season and Nicky Wieben turned in a double-double of her own to lead the Iowa State women's basketball team to a 74-67 win over Illinois State on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones improved to 9-1 going into the holiday break, while Illinois State fell to 7-3 on the year.
“We knew this would be a hard game,” Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. “Illinois State played a great game. Toccara (Ross) had another big game and Lyndsey played one her better games. That was encouraging. We found a way to grind it out and we found a way to win.”
Iowa State got out to a 12-point lead, 50-38, on a basket by Alison Lacey, but Illinois State went on a 10-3 run to cut the Cyclones' lead to five, 53-48, with 10 and a half minutes left. The Redbirds continued to put together a run, eventually taking their first second half lead, 59-57, on a trey Sara Stevenson with 7:40 left.
Iowa State then went on a run of its own, after tying the game at 61, to take a five-point advantage, 66-61, on a bucket in the paint by Alison Lacey with seven minutes left. Illinois State got as close as two points down the stretch, but the Cyclones locked down on defense, continued to find offensive boards and hit free throws to preserve the win.
Medders finished with 18 points and 11 assists to lead the Cyclones, while Ross posted 17 points and eight rebounds. Wieben had 12 points and 11 boards in the winning effort. Iowa State shot 42 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range, while outrebouding the Redbirds, 46-38. Iowa State held Illinois State to 37.9 percent shooting from the floor, but gave up nine threes on 28 attempts for 32 percent.
Medders created the offense for the Cyclones in the first half, putting Iowa State out to a 38-34 advantage going into the locker room. Medders either scored or assisted on 11 of ISU's 16 field goals in the opening 20 minutes, pouring in 13 points and six dimes. She had 11 of ISU's 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor and a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the arc to open the game.
Iowa State got out to a 9-4 lead before the Redbirds quickly tied it at 9-all, and every time the Cyclone built a lead, Illinois State found answers as the score was tied four times and the lead changed three during the opening period.
The Cyclones will take a week long break, before hosting Colgate at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28. ISU will host the American Family Insurance Cyclones Classic the next two nights with games beginning at 5 p.m. each day.
