Cyclones Dominate Holiday Preview

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State women's track and field team opened the 2006-07 season in style on Friday at the Cyclone Holiday Preview. Five Cyclones recorded first place finishes including Leigh Wagner, Rebecca Williams and Sara Boisen.

Rebecca Williams' time of 8.47 in the 60-meter hurdle finals set the Holiday Preview meet record. The redshirt senior was just four hundredths of a second off qualifying provisionally for the NCAA meet in March. Williams also finished fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.84.

Also starting out the season victorious were seniors Sara Boisen and Jenny Mockler. Both Cyclones broke large gaps between themselves and the competition. Boisen competed in the 500-meter dash and won with a time of 1:15.38. Mockler's winning effort in the mile came with a time of 5:07.75. Leigh Wagner also leaped her way into first place. The senior out of Neb. jumped 5-5 beating out Katie Starks from Drake who cleared 5-4 ¼.

ISU newcomers Jenna Caffrey, Angie Lageschulte, and Lashawn Wright, all competing unattached, had impressive debuts. Caffrey, a freshman hurdler from Burlington Iowa, finished second in the 60-meter hurdle finals just behind teammate Williams. A sophomore transfer from UNI, Lageschulte leaped 17-10 ¼ giving her a second place finish in the long jump. Wright, a freshman from Germantown, Md., began her career as a Cyclone in winning fashion. Wright won the 300-meter dash with a time of 40.71.Wright also landed a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 7.74.

“I was really impressed with our newcomers. They performed very well,” said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. “Both Jenna (Caffrey) and Lashawn (Wright) recorded two of the fastest times by freshman in their events. Our newcomers are a hardworking group and I am proud to be associated with them. They all have bright futures.”

The Cyclone women's track and field team will resume their season after the holiday break on Jan. 19at the ISU Open being held at the Lied Recreational Center.
