AMES, Iowa - No. 7 Iowa State improved to 9-2 overall, 3-0 in Big 12 duals Sunday after defeating No. 8 Nebraska, 196.025-195.600 in front of a record crown of 3,141. The Cyclones held off a late charge by the Huskers and claimed its second-straight win at home after three-consecutive road contests. The event was donned "Beauty and the Beast" as the seventh-ranked Iowa State wrestling squad also took on the Huskers simultaneously.
"I thought the combined meet went well and we definitely capitalized with the added fans in attendance," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "We handled the distractions and I think our kids and our fans fed off of the energy from the wrestlers."
The Cyclones, ranked seventh nationally on floor, needed a rally in the fourth rotation on its best event to defeat the Huskers. Nebraska led 146.775-146.750 after three events, but clutch 9.90 performances by Iowa State All-Americans Janet Anson and Laura-Kay Powell led to first place honors on floor, sealing an ISU victory. Senior Erin Dethloff also helped the comeback effort with a season-high 9.875 to claim fourth place. Redshirt sophomore Jade Kvach tied a season high 9.825 to split sixth with NU's Desire' Sniatynski. NU's Emily Parson earned a share of first also scoring 9.90.
"Floor is our best event and we went out there to be confident and win," Kindler said. "We are getting better at handling the pressure and we really executed when it counted."
ISU started the day strong on the vault and scored a season-high 49.300, tying the eighth- highest team score in school history. Anson, the 2005 national runner-up on vault, took first place with a season-high 9.95, the highest individual vault score for any Cyclone this season. Dethloff (9.90) and Powell (9.850) also set season highs to place third and fourth, respectively. Senior Jessica Oney was the fourth Cyclone to record a season high, posting 9.80 in a three-way tie with junior Katie Lasher and Nebraska's Stephanie Carter for fifth. Husker Emily Parsons took second with a 9.925.
"We couldn't have had a better performance on vault today," Kindler said. "We knew we had to set the tone early and I told our team that we didn't want to spend the whole meet playing catch up."
On bars, ISU's 48.950 tied the second highest team score of the season. Dethloff led the way with her second 9.90 of the day to win the event. Kvach tallied a 9.825 for a new season best and fifth-place finish. Nebraska's Desire' Sniatynski received second place scoring 9.875, while fellow Huskers Michele Zabawa and Vanessa Meloche tied for third with 9.850.
The Cyclones led 98.250-97.900, heading into the third rotation on beam and Dethloff continued to step up, taking first with a 9.825. Anson, the reigning Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and Powell, shared second, posting 9.800 along with Sniatynski. Kvach scored a season-high 9.775 which put her in a three-way knot for fifth with Nebraska's Parsons and Kylie Stone.
Dethloff took home all-around honors for the third time, tallying a season-high 39.500. Anson claimed second place, tying her season high with a 39.425. Kvach broke the 39.00 mark for the second time this season, putting up a fourth-place 39.200. Parsons, who has won Big 12 Gymnast of the Week four of six times this season, placed third for the Huskers with a 39.300.
Iowa State avenged an earlier loss to NU at the Super Six in the first meet of the year and improved to 6-0 in duals. Sunday's victory came on one days rest, after a 196.350-194.350 defeat of No. 19 Oregon State. ISU's victory was tempered by the loss of the wrestling squad in the first ever Beauty and the Beast competition. No. 7 ISU fell to No. 5 Nebraska, 22-21.
ISU has now won 15-consecutive meets at Hilton Coliseum and will hit the road to take on No. 20 Minnesota in Minneapolis, Saturday at 6 p.m.
