COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 9 Iowa State put together a season-high beam score to knock-off No. 7 Missouri 196.175-195.875 in front of 1,518 fans at the Hearnes Center on Friday. The Cyclones entered the final rotation with a slim lead, but five ISU gymnasts recorded 9.80 and higher on beam to clinch the win for ISU.
"It's a huge amount of pressure to finish on beam with just a slim lead on your opponent's home floor," Iowa State head coach K.J. Kindler said. "Tonight we showed what kind of team we are to win three of four events against the No. 7 team in the country. We knew we needed to step up on the beam and we didn't look nervous or unsure of ourselves."
Iowa State recorded five of the top six beam scores, capped by Erin Dethloff's second-place 9.850, a career high. Junior Janet Anson (9.825), freshman Ashley Kent (9.825) and junior Ashley Alden (9.800) put together season-highs in a time when the Cyclones needed it. Missouri's Lauren Schwartzman took first with a 9.950.
ISU started the first rotation on bars and did not disappoint as all six Cyclones garnered a 9.70 or higher. Iowa State notched a 48.925 team score as the Tigers just nudged them out with a 49.050. Dethloff, a senior, anchored the Cyclones in the event, posting an ISU season-best 9.875 to tie with Mizzou's Sarah Zigler for second. Two other Cyclones, senior Kacey Oiness (9.750) and sophomore Jade Kvach (9.800), notched season-highs. MU's Jodie Heinicka won the event with a 9.925.
Iowa State moved to the vault and recorded a season-high 49.075, posting three of the top four scores. Anson won the event with a 9.875. Kvach recorded a season-high 9.850 to tie for second with Missouri's Jodie Heinicka. Dethloff put up a 9.800 to take fourth as senior Jessica Oney and junior Lindsey Murphy also chipped in, recording season-highs of 9.725.
After two rotations, Iowa State held a slim lead, 97.950-97.925 and started off the third rotation on arguably its best event, the floor exercise. The Cyclones collected a 49.125 to Mizzou's 48.950. Anson, Dethloff and Schwartzman all tied for first with a 9.850. Kvach helped out with a 9.825 effort while Alden and senior Laura-Kay Powell each recorded a 9.800.
The Cyclones swept the first three places in the all-around, led by Dethloff's season-high 39.375. Anson (39.250) and Kvach (39.225) took second and third, respectively. Kvach's score was a career-high.
Iowa State has now won 28 of the last 30 meetings vs. the Tigers.
The Cyclones will head to Norman, Okla., on Feb. 10, to take on the Oklahoma Sooners at 7 p.m. for ISU's third-consecutive road meet.
